A friend has been successfully streaming with a feed from a GL2. Unfortunately his cam broke down. Can this be done using the HPX170 with the signal output to the computer via firewire? Are there any dangers to my beloved camera by trying?

Thanks.

Should be no danger to the camera. I've done streaming w/ a DVX. You might have to make sure the camera is outputting SD if that's what you are streaming to. BTW, what service are you using?

You can totally stream video out the firewire port; that's what it's there for. Just be careful if you're plugging into a computer using a 6-pin firewire port -- make sure to plug into the computer first, before connecting the cable to your camera. If you do it the other way around you run a risk of blowing up your camera's firewire port. Disconnect the cable from the camera, and successfully connect it to the computer, before connecting it to the camera, and you should be good to go.

And, as j said, make sure you match the REC FORMAT to whatever your computer is expecting. You cannot be set to 720pN, as that disables the firewire port. Any other mode will stream video, but if your software doesn't recognize it then it won't connect together. Try DV format for the most compatibility, if all you need is SD.

Cool glad I found this thread. A project is coming up in a couple of weeks that requires HD live streaming.... I still question the client's and his audience's capability to stream HD but if that's what they want, I'll have to test it at least. So does the client's software have to recognize DVCPRO HD? Or it simply has to recognize 1080/720 24/30 etc etc?

If the client is providing the computer, it's going to have to have software that recognizes DVCPRO-HD. Examples would be Adobe OnLocation, Final Cut Pro 4.5 or later, Avid from about, oh, I think 3.5 or so, EDIUS, ScopeBox... those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Thanks for the info. Despite the fact that it will be my client's responsibility to provide the hard/software I feel the need to consult them on it to make sure it gets done right. So your info here is invaluable.

Thanks Barry
