HPX170 - EX3 match?

Hi I got a dance show coming up that we would like to shoot with two cameras. I have the HPX170 , my friend the EX3. Any suggestions on how we can get these two to match fairly close? One will be static wide, the other medium and moving.

And what format should we shoot in for most color info (a lot of bright reds and colorful costumes - and 10 different sets with different lighting). So in this regard I was going to go with Auto White Balance.

Any suggestions appreciated. thanks.

I also have an HVX200 but not enough P2 to support both cams at the same time. But if you guys are strong for using two Panasonics then I'll find the P2.

Hey Johnny, while I'm new to my HVX200, wouldn't a cost effective idea for a quality match be
using the HVX200 for the stationary wide plugged directly into a mac or firestore to capture as an alt to a stack of P2 Cards, then the HVX as the roaming camera? That way you will already have a very similar look.

I have only used the HVX with P2 so far, but I know its possible to do direct capture (to FCP?)
on an earlier MacBook (Don't try it on a new MacBook Pro as they have elliminated the firewire port).

If you search on the forums for capturing directly to a Mac, or the FireStore alternative, I'm sure you will find what you are looking for.

Have a great production!

Hi Johnny:

I own the HPX170 and I regularly shoot with the EX1 as a client of mine owns two of them. IMHO, you will have a difficult time making these two cameras come anywhere close to matching. The two cameras fundamentally look very different.

The HPX170 has those beautiful Panasonic colors and contrast. It is a 960x540 pixel shifted 1/3" CCD chipset.

The EX1 has much more detail and clarity than the 170. To my eye, regardless of how you tweak the colors on the EX1, the Panasonic colors look better to me, more organic and rich, while the Sony colors look more "deliberate", meaning you can add all the color you want but the colors go from natural looking to garish without ever looking "right" to me. The EX1 uses a 1920x1080 1/2" CMOS imager and it is antiseptically clean in comparison to the 170.

In cutting between the two, the 170 will have that organic almost S16mm look and the EX1 will have that ultra clean super high detailed "video" look.

Not possible to match them IMHO. Not to say that the cameras always need to match exactly in multi-camera shoots, I know everyone thinks that they do need to match but you can exploit the different textures with some creativity.
