HPX170 - DVCPRO HD limitations

Greetings all,

I've been thinking about getting the HPX170 but I'm a little concerned about the limitations of DVCPRO HD - namely that it doesn't support full HD (1920x1080). I'm investing in a new edit suite with a full-res HD finishing monitor (more expensive than the camera) so it would be a bit of a waste having a camera that can't take advantage of full HD.

I think I read somewhere that one could get full HD out of the HVX200 through the SDI outputs. Does anyone know if it's possible to get full HD out of the HVX170 and how one goes about this?

This has been discussed to death. Both the HVX200 and the HPX170 are full HD... do a search for the full tech details.

As for HD-SDI, only the 170 has that -- the regular HVX does not.

firewire will give you an HD video stream in the non native modes, usb will do nothing as far as streaming video.

You can certainly record "full res" HD to P2 cards, but you'd have to use a codec that supports it. Right now the only one is AVC-Intra, so no, that's not gonna happen from an HPX170.

Would be cool if Panasonic gave us an external HD-SDI device, similar to the XDR, that allowed us to drop P2 Cards in and record some AVC-Intra out of the HPX170.

Is that even a possibility?

Sure it's a possibility, in fact they've already done it (the HPM-110 P2 Mobile). But that's probably a tad out of the price tag range for most HPX170 users.

I don't know if they'd do a more affordable unit, but I bet it'd be quite interesting...

And a more portable unit. Something that attaches like a "digital back" to the camera. That'd be sweet. The 110 costs more than my entire rig. LoL. Well, I think?
