HPX170 depth of field

Due to the wider lens we will be getting with the HPX170 I wonder if it will have less depth of field compared to what you would get with the HVX200 or 200a? Will it look just as cinematic? And is the DVX100 the same lens size as the HPX170?

Just because the lens covers a bigger range doesn't mean that it produces generally a deeper DOF. You can still use it within the range of HVX200 lens and you get the same DOF. (DOF depends on focal length, chip size, aperture, and camera to subject distance...)

First of all, less depth of field is attained by opening a lens up, lessening the subject to camera distance, and increasing the focal length of a lens.

So your assumption that it may have less depth of field is the opposite of the truth.

Having a wider focal length... if anything, will increase your depth of field. In theory you should have a slightly deeper depth of field when only using those focal lengths shorter then the previous HVX. But I doubt you can tell a difference. I'm going to go on a stretch and also add, since the camera is a half stop faster than the HVX, you will most likely have to close the lens down half a stop further then had you been shooting on the HVX. Closing the lens down will slightly increase your depth of field. Don't worry though, if you want shallow depth of field, you can use ND filters or adjust the shutter, zoom in, and/or move closer to the subject to achieve the same DoF capabilites as the HVX.

Although that, in itself is still pretty deep.
