HPX170 Bug Found... Anyone else?

I was shooting a long form seminar last week about an hour straight, when in the editing booth noticed that the spanned clips were missing data when spanning within the card. I was shooting 1080 30p and had an mic audio feed from the sound board so we could record the speaker on stage. I was recording on 64gig E-Series P2 cards and each span was 4:55 long when in editing on the timeline noticed something that I have never come across before. When the span was about 4:00 in, the DJ sent an audio feed on music playing, the music was not important to record because we are laying in a separate track in FCP but the music level was not adjusted in camera and over modulated and peaking, the music continued to play and peak as the card spanned to the next clip but when you but those clips together I am missing about 8sec of footage. I thought I was crazy so I checked two other speeches and found the same issue only when the DJ slammed the camera with a hot signal which knocked the camera offline only when the clip spanned but those two times i lost anywhere from 15 frames - 2 sec off footage. Sounds to me a glitch in Panasonic's firmware because it happened with (3) different HPX170's, if you have a peaking audio level slamming the camera and the footage spans to the next clip you will loose footage. (NOTE: spanning within the card not to another card) Anyone else ever heard of this issue, I never have and I bet Panny hasn't either. Maybe Jan can shed some light on the subject or test this out with the Panny engineers.

Not sure why you are manually joining the spanned clips...fcp should span them when using log and transfer and be continuous. Only time I've run into a similar problem is when using a fat32 drive with clips larger than 4gb are spanned(as in your long takes).

Review your clips in the camera, if they are in one piece which I suspect they are, your issue is in the import workflow.

Best,

jan

Jan, Just to be clear I understand that the data in the cards are partial spans and FCP should weave all the clips as one clip but my issue still resides in missing data on the card. As you can see in the file structure from the frame grab from log and transfer window I have attached the first 7 partial spans are 4:55:00 long. About 4:00 into span 0007OE we were slammed with audio from the audio board and when the partial span bridged over to span 00082J the span is not 4:55:00 but is 4:46:11 we actually lost around 9sec of footage, the camera never stopped recording. This is just an example of what happened on multiple occasions only when the audio was slammed/peaking/. I suspect this is a camera firmware issue due to the fact this same issue happened on three different cameras under the same mentioned conditions, this is not in my opinion an import workflow issue as you can see the original data from the card. Is this something that can be recreated on your end?

Here is the link to the log and transfer frame grab...

Hi,

sounds like you should have it looked at as that is not something that the HPX170 should do. I wouldn't call this a bug, as then all HPX170s would do it, and they don't, I would call this broken. You should contact the Panasonic service center, Los Angeles or New Jersey and have them take a look at it. However, Go back to the cards and see if the cards show the break in time code.

Best,

jan

I would call it broken if it happened with one camera, but as I stated in my thread the same issue happens on three different HPX170's with different cards under same conditions. So, I will call it a bug. as for the time time code, Yes! I sent you a link to the log and capture window as an example that shows the time code break quite clearly.

I keep asking for you to take the cards that this is happening on and look at the timecode on the camera. Confirm it on the camera that there is missing timecode. The AG-HPX170 has been delivering for 2 years. If it were a bug, it would have surfaced a long time a go with cries and screams all over this website. That has not happened. So let's take a closer look as to why it is happening on your end. Determine if it is in the camera, not in the log and capture window. look at the PB on the camera and the last TC of one card and compare it to the first TC on the second card. If they are not consecutive, there is an issue. Perhaps with the cards, perhaps with the cameras.

However I do believe this is limited and we should just look more closely at your situation. A bug like this would be huge and would be all over the internet and if we had failed to address it for 2 years we would not be able to sell cameras. So what is making your situation unique.

Thanks,

Jan

My situation is unique due to the fact that this error only happens when getting slammed with audio. Jan with all due respect I have been working with P2 workflow since the first release of the HVX200 then onto the HPX500 and now with the HPX170. I own two HVX200's and have never encountered this issue "but I have never been slammed with audio when partial spanning as well" I am simply asking to take a look into recreating what I encountered. I would only take panny about 5min of there time. This I ask as a long time user, I have recreated the issue with a new e-series card on a different hpx170 today but I could not replicate the issue on my HVX200's. There is always a first for everything and just because this is the first you have heard of it does not mean that I am wrong. In fact it's a bit insulting.

Hi Indewest,

I am not able to recreate what you are running into. I am not trying to be insulting, I am asking you to look at the camera and tell me what the camera says, not what the NLE says. Please do this. What does the camera say as far as last time code number and the next time code number on the spanned card. That is what is going to help. What I have found here is the next number in sequence.

Thanks,

Jan

Seems like some type of a user error to me. I don't see how an over modulated audio signal can screw up the video recording. I can guarantee your problem has nothing to do with the cameras firmware.

Place BOTH cards in your camera or Load All your cards in Log and Transfer and test.

Indewest, you do have a unique problem that only you can troubleshoot.

(NOTE: spanning within the card not to another card) Anyone else ever heard of this issue,) I certainly have not.
P2 cards span from one card to the next not within.
