HPX170 audio input

Hi,

On the DVX, if you set both your CHANNEL selection to INPUT 2, and you don't actually plug any audio capture (mic, shotgun etc) into your INPUT 2 XLR, you are not going to get any audio.

Well, on the HPX it's apparently different. I did a shoot over the weekend with the HPX where audio was not needed so I simply left both my CH to INPUT 2 and not plug anything into it. I had no audio level visually on the LCD but I realized once I downloaded the footage the camera did record audio at a very low level. For this project I couldn't care less since I don't need the audio. However, I am getting an unwanted audio source. Where is this coming from and how do I stop it?

I seem to recall that the 170 can record up to 4 channels at once, including 2 channels from the internal mic. I'd wager that's where your audio came from.

there is a menu setting where you can turn off the internal mic. now im not sure that means it would give you two empty audio tracks OR record video with no audio. ive never tried it.

habragg was on the right track in answering your question.

With the HPX170 (or HVX200) or any DVCPRO HD camera, the camera records 4 tracks of audio. The first two tracks are either routed to your XLR inputs or your internal camera mic (depending on the way you set the switches).

The last two tracks of audio are automatically set to be your internal camera mic. So if you have mics going into both XLR inputs (which record onto tracks 1 and 2), then the camera's internal mic automatically records those tracks onto 3 and 4. Think of it more as a backup audio solution (even though the camera mic will rarely, if ever, produce production quality sound).

Here's a text diagram:

Track 1 - XLR Input or Internal Camera Mic
Track 2 - XLR Input or Internal Camera Mic
Track 3 - Internal Camera Mic
Track 4 - Internal Camera Mic

Yeah it is 4 tracks... now I know where the quiet tracks 3 and 4 are coming from.

Ok I'll find a way to shut the internal mic down thanks

you can also elect not to import the audio if you want video only :)

See, now there was a thread earlier on this exact topic where gave this advice, and it just didn't seem to click with the guy. This is one of the first things I learned in editing, and that was teaching myself.

I don't think that's possible - let us know if you find a way. But, the effort is meaningless, audio occupies so little memory compared to video, that going to lengths to avoid it is wasted effort IMHO.
