HPX170 Audio Channels

Hey DVX User,

I just upgraded from the dslr world to an HPX170 and couldn't be more excited! My question is about the audio. Right now I'm just using the internal mic, and I understand that it records in 4 channels. When I export it to FCP7 I get the four channels of audio, but channels 3 and 4 just have a "white noise" sound and don't produce any productive audio. Is there a way to turn these off, or is it best just to delete tracks 3 and 4 in FCP. I'm used to the Rode Videomic Pro and only having 2 tracks of audio to work with. I've played around with the camera and didn't really see a way to turn off channels 3 and 4, but I'm probably just missing something.

Second question. One the front there is a button for Input 1 and 2 with the options of line and mic. I originally had it on mic, but it seems that line is the correct button when recording internally. I played around with it and didn't see much of a difference, but if there is a preference on this, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks and look forward to your answers
Leif

Welcome to the Forum!

from what i know from my HVX, there shouldn't be noise coming from the Mic XLR's, but i always had the buttons on the front set to MIC. maybe LINE could cause that noise? Usually if you didn't hook up an external mic to the camera the channels 3 and 4 should be blank, not even little noise... also check the button on the inner side of the LCD, make sure you set CH1 and CH2 to INT L and INT R and turn of the phantom power/mic power for Input 1 and 2.

The internal mic is a stereo (2-channel) mic.

The HPX170 always records 4 channels: 2 from the internal mic, and 2 from the XLRs. You didn't have anything connected to the XLRs, so you didn't get anything on channels 3 & 4.

Those switches have nothing to do with the internal mic. They only affect the XLR ports. Set 'em to MIC if you have a microphone connected to the XLRs; set 'em to LINE if you have a line-level source (like the feed from a mixer) connected.

Thanks for clearing that up for me guys. So when I log and transfer clips into FCP, should I just then delete tracks 3 and 4 once they are in the timeline, or is there a way to not capture them or even record them in the camera?

They will always be recorded, you can't not record them. As to your other question, I'll defer to someone who knows FCP, since I don't. But yes, they will always be recorded.

You can delete them, I usually do to keep the timeline clean. Be sure that your "target" tracks are right so you dont delete the usefull sound! Your next thing it sounds like you need is a good quality shotgun mic! All the best!

Thanks for the replies guys and useful information. I'll definitely be browsing and using the site alot as I use my camera more.
Thanks again

And I thought everybody was upgrading from the HPX170 to DSLR!
So, I'm not along in hanging on to my workhorse.

One tip is to make sure you don't need the audio before deleting. If your primary audio has a clipping moment, a backup track can be useful.

you can disable (not capture) the extra tracks in the log and transfer step in FCP. there are little buttons you can check to bypass capture on any of the 4 channels (or video if you just need to capture audio)
