HPX170 and an external monitor

I have one I am using now that is slightly better than a slice of toast and a flashlight, as such I would like to get your opinions as to what would be a good $500 ish HD external monitor to use for framing and focus ?

Well you are limited to HD-SDI and component monitors with the HPX170. HD-SDI monitors are more expensive then HDMI (why oh why doesn't the HPX have an HDMI out). Although you are in luck as the SmallHD DP6 is currently on sale! It's 300$ cheaper at the moment. All you have to do is "like" the smallhd on facebook and you'll get a 300$ discount. Which would mean that you can get an DP6 bundle for 600$.

Which monitor are you using now?

i second the vote for smallHD. i have their original dp1 and its one of the three or four things i own that they will have to pry from my cold dead hands.

you can go for the discount on the dp6 or look for a used 9" dp1 for about $100 more if you need something bigger.

yeah. that varizoom is pretty well outdated by current standards. it might have been ok with an XL2 in about 2005. but by current standards, its not even a good desktop photo frame ; )

If you want to go cheap: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&isRelated=1&item=180815785414

+It's got an 1024x600 resolution.
-It probably uses a TN matrix so not god for accurate colour reproduction and the viewing angles are probably not good. But for general framing and focus it should be ok. You can get it for 200$ and the package includes also a sony NPF1 battery and a charger for it:) It doesn't get much cheaper then that.

You also have the Swit monitors. The S-1071F for example. All the new swit monitors have a FFA matrix which is great. It's very similar to an IPS matrix.
Also you have the Marshall and the Manhattan monitors. Manhattan monitors I think are the cheapest of the bunch (actually the SmallHD is currently because of the sale) and they use 1280x720 panels - same resolution as smallhd. You also have the TvLogic 5.6˝ monitors. This are the most expensive of the bunch. TvLogic monitors use the exact same LCD panel as the SmallHD DP6 if understand things correctly...

Am I the only person who didn't fall in love with the SmallHD DP6. I'm not bashing it. I wish I loved it. It is really nice for framing and focus. Seems like good quality and construction. And, I'm tempted to buy one. But the color wasn't good on the one I tested/rented. Too yellow. I did use the bars and calibrated as best as possible. I've researched this online and see others have had similar problems. Does anyone have any thoughts about this or suggestions for a better color accurate monitor (SDI). I'm not looking to spend $2000. The $300 discount is really tempting.....
