HPX170 - A Second Look

Call me out for the noob that I am but could someone explain why PAL/NTSC switchable is such an attractive feature? I currently can't see why someone would really need this unless they were doing a ton of work and travel on both sides of the ocean...

I've had it a few times when overseas crews (I'm in South Africa) contact me to hire HVX's to shoot here because they don't wanna fly with theirs, but then they can't shoot NTSC here cause the HVX is pal only, so I can't help them with camera's.

If they are switchable, problem solved, they don't have to bring their own camera's, just scene files if they've got.

Also in PAL land there is not 24p on the camera, if it becomes switchable, PAL land can also shoot movies on 24p (in NTSC mode).

thats why it is usefull shoook,

thanks,
Derrick

Also:

DVCPRO HD 1080i60/24p is 1280x1080

DVCPROHD 1080i50/25p is 1440x1080

This makes absolutely no difference to the outcome of the compression. I would defy anyone to show me in picture content playback, even resolution chart playback that they can see this. You won't.

How important is an HD/SDI slot? Will it preserve uncompressed 4:2:2 color sampling of HPX 170?

Earlier in this thread I believe this was confirmed. If you wanted full resolution uncompressed HD 4:2:2... you can achieve it through the HD/SDI slot and a capture card OR the new Flash XDR or nanoFlash from Convergent Design. Opens up a lot of possibilities when you need the highest quality footage!

Thanks, jstunzi... Gotta plead ignorance here: does this mean I can capture to NLE and get still get full color sampling? Or is this for a flim-out or something? The reason I ask is because I'm trying to choose between 200a and 170, so...

barry or jan,

will the HPX allow for displaying just TC on an external monitor? there's been more than a handful of occasions on set where the script sup. wanted to see timecode and i had to send them everything (which a lot of the time i have up) with the HVX.

also, does the focus assist output to a monitor now?

how about the waveform? can it be sent to an external monitor? is it grouped with everything else if so?

If your NLE system has a capture card that accepts HD/SDI then you can capture directly and get full color 4:2:2.

Are you going to be utilizing the miniDV tape deck? In other words, will you be shooting SD? If not then the 170 is for you, not to mention all the features you dont get with the 200.

Don't think I'll need to shoot SD, but I have the feeling the HVX's price will go down after the HPX hits the market (a rebate offer? Lower price point?). Also wondering if HPX price point may fall after debut (I believe HVX200 was $5999 at first and then settled at $5199) Noticed at least one seller at under $4900 for HPX, so keeping fingers crossed...

6 pin Firewire does two things for the HPX-170.

Firstly, it is compatible with locking firewire cables which prevents cords from ripping out as easily. This would be great when using it with a Firestore or even tethered to a computer.

Secondly, the 6 pin port versus the 4 pin port of the HVX-200 is just more secure. 4 pin firewire is what's called firewire mini... or what a DV port looks like. 6 pin firewire is what you'd have on your computer.

Keep in mind that the 6-pin on the HPX170 is NOT bus powered, which is unusual but understandable.

But is there really a need for bus powered? The camera has it's own batteries. There's no way that Firewire could power the camera on its own. So... bus-powered firewire is a pretty useless feature. Right? I may be wrong here.
