HPX170 - A Second Look

Even judging from the photos on pro video coalition the hpx170 looks a good bit thinner...

Of course I've never used the HPX170 but does anyone else think that it could almost be called a spiritual HD successor to the DVX100?

I have done my best to go through the posts and see if this has been answered, but here goes. I like many have been waiting for the HPX 170 for all the right reasons (image wise etc) and also because so much of what I already own for my DVX100B will fit immediately.
My question is will the .6 wide angle from Cavision work on this new 170 lens? I know it wil fit being 72mm but will it add or distort?
Thanks
Brian

Yes and no. Yes, in that it's almost the same size and weight as the DVX, plus its battery slots in vertically and it has a joystick. But no, in that the title of HD Successor to the DVX100 more properly belongs with the HMC150, not the HPX170. The HPX170 goes upmarket, the HMC150 is more equivalent (in price and target market) to the HPX170.

But, since they're very nearly the same camcorder under the hood, the confusion is obvious.

An SD WA lens on an HD camera will probably not look very good. Add-on lenses are made to SD or HD spec. Time to Ebay and buy an HD one probably.

The HD-SDI port does both HD-SDI and SD SDI.

But I don't know what append if you output an HD signal through the HD-SDI to a SD monitor.

Re-test it. The model he got was never deemed a "production" model. Just the main sensor performance stuff, the DNR mainly.

FYI Canadians,
I called Vistek in Toronto today. I was told the delivery date for their P.O.(Purchase Order) was 30,10,08. The retail priice was $4999.00. They had no info as to it coming with a P2 or book or such.
I have called Panasonic Canada to try to track down more ...got voicemail.

OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DAMN! Congrats!

Now I have to call my dealer! lol

Sneakle, what did u pay for it?

Barry:

Were you ever able to try your framerate hack on the review versions you had? Do you anticpate your frame rate hack will work on the 170? Not sure if I can live without my 2 FPS with 350 degree shutter as F1, I hope the 170 is "hackable".

Canadian Info: Don Zahara from Panasonic Canada just called me back to let me know that Canadian order will be shipping soon and before the end of Oct. Though he also said that everybody (the world) gets them at the same time??? There will be a limited number of the new cameras on the first release (he said this was due to world wide demand) and that by the end of Nov. all would be up to speed stockwise. He also mentioned that the camera would be sold WITHOUT a P2 card in Canada but that would be reflected in a lower price that if with the camera. Panasonic Canada feels that the buyer should decide what size P2 card they need and buy it. He told me the 64 gig cards would be out in early 2009. Sadly Barry Green's book will also not be part of the package. The Panasonic 5 year guarantee will be. He said the suggested retail for the 16gig card was $1000.00 but dealers could sell for less.
