Hello -
I own a HPX170 and a Canon 7D. I shoot music videos, short pieces for online magazines, short films/docs , etc. I have a couple questions that I was hoping someone could help me out with.
I'm very comfortable with the Panasonic cameras. I've graduated from the DVX to the HPX and am very happy. I also just recently bought a 7D as a B-Cam and am very satisfied with it's quality/depth. Here are my questions:
For my scene settings on the HPX I have combined a mix between Barry Green's "Detail" and "Dynamic Range." I like the look but am also concerned about all the talk about Max Dynamic Range in the camera. I was wondering how much I should think about this while I shoot. I am comfortable with color correction in final cut, but was always taught to shoot as "correct" as possible and keep post work to a minimum if possible. Should I stress dynamic range in post or get the colors and contrast as close to what I want on the camera itself?
Second, the HPX doesn't have the "jello-cam" problem or the aliasing issue that the 7D has. But I prefer the close-up shots with the 7D because of the depth. Is it crazy to mix the two on a shoot? HPX for the wides and mediums and the 7D for the CU'S?
Third, on a shoot, is it OK to mix the Scene settings on the HPX? Say I like the "Filmic" look on one scene, but then would prefer a more "Detailed" stress on some shots in another. As long as I don't mix them in the scene, would it just look too strange to match them? Can I maybe even mix them in the same scene?
And fourth, In Barry Green's book he says for the web to put up the detail on your camera to get a sharper image. But for theater, lower the detail. Most of my stuff is on the web, but what about for TV? Is the higher detail setting still going to be acceptable? I obviously want the sharpest image possible without it look electronically boosted.
I've done tests, but would just like to hear some extra input/advice. Thanks!
