HPX vs Canon 7d/5d vs. Sony XD Cam

I've been out of the filmmaking/video making game for some time now and I have a budget to make a camera purchase.

I have the budget to acquire the HPX, The Canon 7d/5d, or Sony XD EV1/EVX.

My goal is short films and docu shoots.

Any and ALL feedback is sincerely appreciated since i'm playing catch up. Last camera i owned was generation 1 DVX100.

If you can wait three months, get the AF100. It's like a perfect merging of all three of those. The sharpness and detail of the Sony EX1/EX3, the shallow DOF of the Canon 7D, and the ergonomics, usability, menu settings/color/gamma of the HPX170.

good advice!

every camera you mentioned has its good and bad points

hpx (im assuming you mean 170)
pro: all around good camera, nice "film like" image. great shooting features and ergonomics
con: not great in low light. some people find the P2 experience a little pricey

5d/7d
pro: great film like DOF. VERY nice low light performance and ISO control. is a great still camera too!
con: JELLOVISION! no pro-level audio inputs, no affordable way to control lens functions remotely. can only shoot in 15 min blocks

sony xd ev/ex1
pro: better in low light than the hpx, affordable shooting media, that sharp sony "look"
con: recording format and that sharp "sony look"

if i could only get one of the above cameras right now. i think the hpx is the better all around choice.

but like barry said. if you can wait 3 months or so, the af100 sure seems like a great option!

Like Barry and wzgn said, the AF100 sounds like an awesome choice assuming it is in your price range. The price has been announced as just under 5k USD, but you need to factor in support/lenses/audio/lighting/moniters/etc as well...
