HPX 500 Football Highlight - Overcranked

Hey Guys,

Just thought I'd share a highlight pkg we just wrapped up. Shot with a 500 on the ground shooting 60FPS overcranked, and some 24P. A 170 was used for the top shots.

Second time I've used it to shoot game action, and I'm really pleased with the results. The ending celebration shots are a little dark, but that was my fault for underexposing so bad and not having enough time to color correct a ton.

I was shooting wide open with a 500 shutter, so I had a DOF of about 6 inches (maybe). It was a BEAST to pull focus with the viewfinder, but I managed fairly well. That would be my only complaint so far. That, and the scene file wheel can be a little bit of a pain to change when trying to go from slow-mo to live action in a hurry (like after a winning TD pass). Anyone know if it's possible to set a user button to change a scene file between 60FPS and 24? I haven't looked too hard into it, but I haven't been able to do it.

Hope you enjoy

Thanks for sharing!

Looks great.

Is there much difference between 24/60p overcrank and shooting 720p60?

When I put 60p footage on a 24p timeline in Edius it looks pretty good. Plus you have the option of audio and a 60p use if needed.

I actually haven't spent much time trying 60 in a 24 timeline. I'm on Final Cut, and when I tried it the first time I got some really weird stuttering so I just decided to stick with the overcranking. I'll run some tests and let you know if I find anything out...

This is really nice. I'm sure shooting in that weather was a headache, but slo-mo football in the rain can be a thing of beauty.

I must be getting old, but I can't imagine shouldering a fully loaded ENG cam for an entire football game.

Really nice footage!

Thanks guys, glad you like it.

I was actually really surprised how light the 500 is during a game. We just migrated from a Sony DSR-400 with a huge Anton Bauer Brick on the back, so this has been a welcome relief!

The lens is the standard Fuji 17X... I tried to save money and didn't get the one with the 2x extender, and now I'm kicking myself. If anyone knows of any extenders that can be added, please let me know. It can be a pain trying to get tight enough sometimes.

Hi Joe,

It was the Fujinon XA17x7.6BRM 17x 2/3"

Like I said, I wish I had the extender, but I'll make it work for now without.

The 2x extender is difficult at night

The 2x extender is difficult at night

Enjoyed your footage and camera work. I shoot a lot of night field sports of the other football and the 2x entender on that lens really sucks up the light. Unless you were in a pro stadium you probably wouldn't have enough light to do much with the extender on. At least that's what I have found.

Curious as to what scene settings you are using. I notice that really saturated colors under stadium lights at night have a tendancy to bloom or appear soft. Your footage held up well.

Yeah, I was already wide open, so I don't know that I would have been able to handle an extender anyway. I do have a Cannon lens with a 2X on it, but it's SD. I tried it at a game, and it worked fairly well, but it didn't have the CAC, so when I'd zoom all the way in I would get a blueish hue around everything.

I actually didn't have any scene settings loaded in the camera. I had just got it a week before, and basically shot with it right out of the box. I was pretty pleased with how it looked stock, so I haven't really changed it. I've done some grading in Apple Color on some other projects with the footage, but for the most part, I just leave it alone.

Nice footage! Running with a JVC HD110 package myself and may be selling it in a few weeks.. (he says now for 2 months.. i) Looking at the JVC HM700 for 720p XDCAM-EX 35mbs or a Panasonic HPX-500. I've always loved the DVCPRO-HD, but went JVC because of cost of media and in my price range only the HVX200 was cost comparable. I hate palm corders, especially large palm corders so that nixed the HVX-200 after 10 minutes.

So how is the P2 ingestion with the latest FCP now? does it still have the long transfer/import times (almost real time?) or has that been addressed? Well going to track down some 720p (24/60p) JVC XDCAM 35mbs footage and see if it solves the long GOP artifacts and jitters, or start looking for a used HPX-500. I'll skip over the HPX-300 thank you. Not interested in any CMOS from anyone, even though the 720p doesn't have the huge roller shutter issue the 1080p/i does in the HPX-300. I'll have to get educated on the stock and option lenses for the HPX-500. I take it yours was not the stock lens, or was it?

Are all of the "A Closer Look:____" videos filmed on -500's?
I filmed a whole season for my high school team with a -200a this past season, and I must say your footage looks stunning compared to mine. (excluding the fact we had different cams.)

Sorry, I just saw you guys posted.

The ingest times with the new FCP are pretty decent. It's much faster now with the improved "log and transfer" rather than the "Import Panasonic P2" workflow. It also obviously depends on what type of footage you're ingesting. We shoot most of our Press Conferences in DV, and those ingest pretty quickly.

All of the ground footage from the "closer looks" are shot on the HPX 500 at 60FPS. The top is shot on a 170. They seem to match pretty closely. We haven't been too good about color correcting lately because we've been so rushed, so they could probably match a lot better.

Here's a more recent addition. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vntT-tJRApw

It's more compressed, so the HD doesn't come through quite as well. We were having compressor problems, and YouTube wouldn't upload it in HD. Unfortunately they also don't have a "replace video with a higher quality version" option yet, so we're stuck with the HQ.

Thanks for the compliment, I've been shooting football for a while now, it's kind of turned into my obsession, so it's come with a LOT of practice.

Is your high school video online?

Evan
