Hpx-500 = Editing Workflow?

Normally shoot on a dslr and all footage is transcoded to Pro Res. What is the best workflow for hpx-500 files and using Final Cut Pro?

Thanks

you have 2 options.
1. transcode files to native intra codec. by doing it this way you will need to render your timeline before exporting because FCP can't encode Intra files. it can only decode.
2. transcode files to a flavor of Pro Res. this is the way the i work with p2 material and since your using a Pro Res codec you won't need to render the timeline before exporting.

Thanks!! I know dslr footage I transcode to Pro Res Lt, does hpx-500 footage benefit from a higher formate ie. Pro Res Hq?

in my opinion there isn't much noticeable difference in quality when using Pro Res LT or Pro Res 422 for p2 material... Pro Res HQ is overkill.

It shoots DVCPROHD Codec - there is no need for any change. Just bring it in as it is.

So no need to convert? Converting to anything would degrade the footage? Normally do not shoot on an HPX-500 but I have a project I shot which looks great and wanted to know the best process for inputting and outputting this material. It will be for internet

Thanks

Yes, converting would be a generation step.
DVCPRO HD has been a standard for many years and it being replaced, somewhat, with AVC-Intra.
But a solid codec none-the-less.
L&T the material in without any conversion. DVCPROHD will look great for you.

Go to this page, with video. Shows you almost everything. http://library.creativecow.net/articles/ross_shane/p2_workflow/video-tutorial
Best to download the Panasonic drivers as described in video. When I build Macs people who use P2, I recommend using Raylight. Great program that works with P2 and FCP.

Frankly, I don't re-encode anything anymore, since I went to GrassValley Edius, which is realtime on every native codec. Blows away FCP, if you need speed, which I need for VNR's that I shoot and edit in 20min. and upload to the news FTP's. Even ABC bought 100's of boxes of Edius for speed and their P2 cameras. Edius just came out with an integrated 3D trial. I'm into 3D, so this is amazing stuff. Even J. Cameron is trying it out.

Thanks for the help & the program sounds interesting, but speed is really not my concern as I work on more creative projects.
