The HPX does not have a guide for 2:35 in the viewfinder. anyone have any suggestions for being able frame for this aspect ratio while shooting handheld...?

You could use the top of your frame as a guide and crop off the bottom.

i typically tape my monitor or if the monitor allows, use the markers for 2:35
best I can tell you is to use a monitor that have that marker and then just get a feel for where the 2:35 falls in the viewfinder and go by feel. You can always shift the frame in post in you're a little off.
