I have been woking with hpx 301 in 720p50 for a single project during the past 8 months now, and coming to the end.
During the job, I used FCP's compressor to deliver the client both MP4 and MPEG-2 files, viewable in computer. These files look great and there is little or no difference compared to the original huge mov. file.
In a point, I used to delvier a tarditional TV viewable DVD disc's also. I used compressor in combination with DVD studio pro or just idvd of mac, with egually bad results. The drop of resolution would damage my reputation and put the job quality in question, as the client dont know the techincal details to know why this happens, he just sees it with his "own eyes".
Now, at the end of the project, the client is going to publish any sort of "exclusive" DVD in combination of a book, as a gift to selected corwd and limited sales in some art museums and similar outlets. Based on the MP4 files the client has, he believes firmly that the material is amazing in quality:smiley_up, and I would not like to dissapoint him a the end.
We cannot prognose how the end user intends to view the disc, to stick it in his tv set or to put in on a pc laptop, most likely. I have seen supermarkets in madrid selling blue ray players blow 200 dollars, so it could be considered main stream, although myself i dont have one....
Would a blu ray disc be the only way to go if I dont want to compromise the quality?
Or is there another midlle ground compared to the miserable standard DVD's?
Like somehow delivering hd material on a standard DVD disc? It would not be viewable on a normal DVD player, but with computer only??
Any real life experiences with the matter?
(I live in PAL-Spain, but supposedly the basic question is same as in USA).
