HPX 171: Variable frame rates don't seem to work.

I would appreciate any help with this problem: Having read the manual and Barry Green's guide, I was particulary keen to try the "undercranking" and "overcranking" feature of the HPX 171 (PAL version). I shot short scenes using 720p 25p and 720p 50p and changing the frame rate as advised. The thing is, the footage looks "normal" ie not slow mo or fast when I play it back in the LCD screen of the camera, nor when I render the data on my computer (using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5). I hope it's not a camera problem and is just me doing something wrong. I'm still a little confused by frame rates! By the way, on a different subject, the camera doen't seem to have the 1/12 shutter speed option for either 720p 25p or 720p 50p

Thanks Barry, I'll try that. I'm still a bit hazy on this though. I thought with 720pN the sound oesn't get recorded, but with non-native it dioes (page 27). Please bear in mind that I'm quite new to this. Cheers.

You don't get audio with VFR. If you want Audio then shoot at 60p and slow it down or 24p and speed it up. Otherwise (For better results) shoot VFR.

Aha, yes, I can get the desired undercranking and overcranking in the N mode, so problem solved-thanks! Still a bit confused why I couldn't seem to get the VFR in the non-native modes, but life's too short to worry about that...

You do, but it's not automatic. You have to go through a frame rate converter in post if you want the effect.
