HPX 170 HD-SD! to Panny AJ-HD1400 deck

Hi guys,

this is my first post in this great forum.

I'm a freelance editor and I will be directing my debut short film sometime in December.
I'm sill deciding on whether to purchase the HVX 200a or wait for the HPX170.
As it is, my understanding is that there will not be any quality difference between the 2 camera. However, I own a Panasonic AJ-HD 1400 DVCpro HD deck and if I were to connect the HPX170 to the deck thru HD-SDI for recording, will I see a significant improve in quality as compare to recording it to P2 card. Lugging the deck around is not a problem as most of the scene is in an apartment.

My next question is if I decide to go with the HPX170 HD-SDI route, is there any way to trigger the recording on the deck like the firewire connection or do I have to crash record on the deck for every take? That will be a nightmare I reckon!

BTW, my DP has also advised me to consider the EX1 and record directly to the Panny deck thru HD-SDI. Good options? Shoot Sony and record on Panasonic? I would reckon there's no way to trigger the recording on the deck though.

Any advise is much appreciated as I'm still learning. Please excuse my english as it's not my spoken language.

thanks.

The 170 would be able to go to the deck, yes. But you could chain the 200A to the deck as well (using firewire instead of HD-SDI).

Theoretically they should produce identical results. But real-world testing might reveal differences, I don't know. Haven't tried it.

I doubt HD-SDI would pass through a record start/stop signal (maybe it would?) But the firewire does pass through a record start/stop.

why purchase? You could save some money for other equipment if you rent. In either case, rent before you choose the camera to test that it will do everything you want it to do. I know the hpx isn't out yet but it will be by the time you shoot.
