Hello everyone
I just picked up my HPX170 6 days ago and have been getting to know it, learning the menus, offloading, switching settings, etc. I've shot outside maybe 2 times. It has been raining off and on so I haven't had a chance to really play with it.
Anyways... today I managed to crash the camera 2 times. How I did it, I have no idea. I'll try to describe what I was doing at the time right before it crashed.
First time:
I turned on the camera. While in CAM mode I went into the MENU. Went to SW MODE and while toggling down that menu the controls froze. The joystick, menu, mode and power on/off switch were all non-operational. In fact all the buttons seemed non-operational. You could still see an image on the screen. The camera was still on. I could control the lens manually but I had no way to start record nor turn off the camera. A few seconds later the screen went green. 3/4 of the screen was a brighter green than the rest. (Green Screen of Death?) The only way to shut it off was to pull the battery.
So I did that. Turned it back on and everything was back to normal. Checked my clips and they all played fine.
Record settings at the time: 720p 24pN Scene File F6. Full Manual.
Second time:
A few hours later I decided to shoot outside. The sun finally came out. Yay!
Turned on the camera. Started taking some dolly shots. 3 and a half shots later the camera freezes again. The screen (I wasn't able to take a photo of it at the time) still said REC even though no Timecode was rolling. Again I could zoom in/out, focus, even switch white balance but on/off switch did not work. Had to pull the battery again.
Insert battery, turned it back on, switched to MCR mode to check the clips all seemed fine except for one.
Clip 13 seems to have been created when the camera crashed during the recording of Clip 12.
I offloaded all the clips via firewire using FCP6's Log and Transfer and Clip 13 is the only one that says:
Preview unsupported for this format
when you select it.
So. Has anyone run into this problem with their HPX170's? This camera is not that old. Like I said I've had it for almost 6 days. Bought it brand new from a Pro dealer here in Oregon (Pro Video and Tape Inc.) I am probably going to call the Technical Support number on the back of the manual. If the crash happens again I will have my digital P+S to document it.
But in the mean time...
