HPX 170 audio question

I'm wondering if the following is due to the camera or user misuse. I film a lot of live music in studio and in concert, and find that the 170, even when I use external attenuators, overmodulates very easily (I usually use a rode nt-4, or nt-2 mic). What is driving me a bit crazy is that I can't hear the overmodulation in my headphones (decent quality) but when I import the footage into FCP and playback via QT the audio is often blown to sh--. However, the last few times I've played the audio from the camera's headphone jack into audio program (Sound Studio) and the subsequent audio is often modulated correctly (though soft), or occasionally overpeaks. Does this make any sense at all? Are my internal camera settings a mess or does the 170 have a worse preamp than say the dvx100 (never had this problem using same audio setup)?

I'm wondering if anyone has heard of this problem/issue?
Thanks for any tips!
Matt

i use a shure vp88 stereo mic for live rock shows. it has a really high sound pressure tolerance. one of the best $700 ive ever spent!

Thanks for the mic recommendation, I'll try to track one down. I'm still wondering however why the audio sounds ok from the headphone jack, but then when imported in FCP and played, the Quicktime audio is way blown out. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Matt
