HPX-170 at 640x480 24p? Best Settings?

I have a client who wants a final product... wait for it... .wmv file at 640x480 (rock it like it's 1997.) Anyway, I have never shot anything other than 720 and 1080 with my HPX-170 and I shoot usually everything in 720/24pN so - it's what I'm most comfortable editing in. I'm trying to understand the 640x480 settings (over 60i? etc...) and I'm a little confused, is there something that's the same in terms of pulldowns and framerates at the 640x480 size? I don't want to mess with 24p advanced and basically want the same workflow as 720 24pN but just smaller and obviously not hd. Any suggestions for what to tweak to keep simple? Thanks.

I would just shoot 720pn and then after editing make it 640x480. If he does not want letter box then just make sure to turn on your 4 by 3 guide lines on you LCD and keep everything with in that space so when you do your conversion to 640 by 480 you can just chop off what you dont need.

Hm, well the only specs they gave me were: final product .wmv and at 640x480 so I don't think they care if it's 24p or 30... And I shoot most everything with the 5D at 24P now or the HPX at 720 24pN - so I'm just trying to keep it as similar as possible without creating a lot of extra workflow for me after (like cropping.) But the final is only 5 minutes, so I guess it wouldn't be a huge deal. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

If you shot it in 720, you're going to have a hell of a time trying to keep everything in the "safe zone" for when you convert 16:9 to 4:3.

As Barry suggested, shoot in DVCPRO50 at 4:3, it'll be the easiest on your workflow. It won't be any different for you aside from changing the Sequence settings to match the resolution and aspect ratio.

One last question on this - if I want to edit parts of this into my reel (which is all 720 24pN) will the dvcpro 50 footage be easy to drop in - is dvcpro 50 at 24pn? Thanks again.

Mixing 4:3 with 16:9 HD is going to cause you complications no matter what, so just be aware of that.

DVCPRO50 can be 24pA, not 24pN. Most any editor will treat 24pA footage as 24pN so it shouldn't be any issue, but I guess it depends on which editor you're using.
