HPX250: HPX & 1080P Mode?

Hello All,

I'm a little confused reading thru the HPX250 manual when it comes to recording modes...

I have a client who would like me to shoot in 1080P at 60 frames. Is this possible with the HPX250?

Thanks,
Larry

It is not possible, only 720p60 is supported. You need to get in touch with the client and figure out what he wants. How would you display the 1080p60 material in the first place? Blu-ray doesn't support it, nor do any of the video streaming sites (YouTube/Vimeo/ect.). They will simply slow it down to 1080p30 instead.

Sorry about the typo... they did say 1080p30. I'm not sure why they asked me to shoot that way because the end result will be displayed @ 720P.

Can the HPX250 shoot 1080p30?

Thanks and sorry!

I'm sure you realize this by now, but yes, the HPX250 will do 1080/30p (using the 30PN mode). Be aware that if you want to put that on a Blu-Ray disk you'll have to edit as 60i since the only progressive 1080 NTSC format supported is 24p.

Thanks for all of the info. I'm not sure how or what they are using to display the final product. They informed me that they can accept .mxf files from P2, so I'm assuming if I shoot in 1080p30 they will be able to edit with the file. I will confirm that with them.

If they are using Final Cut Pro 6/7 or Premiere CS4 or above they should be fine (not sure about AVID versions), especially if they've ever worked with footage from the HVX-200 or HPX-170. It's exactly the same process, even though the HPX-250 can utilize AVC-Intra. If they are using Final Cut Pro 6 on a PowerPC (hey, it could happen!), or would prefer you shoot in DVCPRO HD instead, you can set that option on the 250.

Whatever you do, make sure you copy the entire contents of the card for them. If you copy just the .MXF files and call it day, you're going to run into trouble.
