HP Touchpad

So... who tried to get their hands on one after the price cut?

I've been wanting an iPad for a long long time... but the cost had been prohibitive for me... so, on a whim this morning I ordered a Touchpad through one of the few websites still showing stock, and it looks like my order went through, and received a delivery date!

I am hoping this tablet will be good for some simple word processing, email and web stuff... maybe get an iPad next year, but for now, at $99 this will work fine.

It was Insight.com. Sadly as of earlier they're no longer taking orders. Apparently sold out (as is everyone)

Yeah, it certainly is not an iPad, but I think it'll be a nice device to have, and at $99, I am not out much and could probably resell close to that price if I ever wanted to.

Confusing sentence.

Good luck with your HPTP.

I'm gonna try my luck tomorrow morning when the Best Buy near me gets a shipment. They received 5 on Monday and said they might get a couple more on Thursday morning...here's to hoping. It does feel a little cheap and the OS looks slow (at least the demo models), but I mean if I don't like it, I'll just return it. For $99, its kind of hard to pass up.

There's $1500 bounty for whoever figures out a way to install Android on the thing. That would be an awesome device for $99.

I have an iPad 2, but it seems to me if you don't need a ton of apps, and mostly want to do email, websurf, Facebook, take notes, etc. this would be a steal at $99.

Hawk and everyone else that wants one, keep checking slickdeals.net

They always find out first about sales and what sites to buy from. Me personally, I don't see the appeal in the touchpad (or iPad). I have a smart phone and a laptop, so I don't see why I would need something else in between these two

I got my hands on one, going to pick it up this week. Still not sure if it will be a birthday present to allow my daughter to watch videos on or if I'll do something else with it.
Already have an iPad.

You guys do know that HP stopped making this after just a couple of weeks. HP, worlds largest PC company based on revenue, announced it is leaving the tablet, phone and PC business altogether... abandoning 30% of it's money stream, and the $10 billion aquisition of Palm last year, in order to make the tablet and the phones, which it abandoned so quickly.

*palms face* (no pun intended)

Those HP tablets are on sale because it's already dead. I hope you enjoy it while it lasts... maybe save it in a box and 50 years from now, when they are super rare, donate it to the museum of failed business ventures. I own HP stock and so I'm a bit grumpy since last week. :(

Unless somebody comes along and buys WebOs from HP, I doubt you'll see this tablet in any shape or form, ever again. Apple has the market on tablets... if anyone is going to break the monopoly, it might be Google. It won't be HP.

They've stopped making them, yes, but word is they're still going to be supporting them and creating content for them.

AND it's better than the one I have right now, which is "not one."

I'd like to put ANDROID OS on there, which has a ton of support. The hardware alone is worth almost $300. IMO it's a great deal.

Yes, yes... but how many companies are going to create apps for a product with no future? I'm designing an app and it's expensive and time consuming. There is no way I'd ever spend the money to do it for the HP tablet. That's like people still making HD-DVD's for those who still have HD-DVD players.

There will likely be content, but all of it will be broad based apps, like email, googlemaps, etc. App developers will go after ALL HP tablet owners, so there won't be much specialty or niche apps. Dividing a small market into an even smaller portion by targeting just a small group such as "filmmakers with HP tablets" will destroy any profitable ability. Third party developers with niche apps, will probably only program for Apple. We'll see, but I don't think many will pour money and work into a dead tablet. I'm very sad, I was betting on WebOS and HP to give Ipad a run for it's money... but they threw in the towel. Now where is Google? I want some competition in this tablet world.

Well, that's totally out of HP's power... and I doubt Google will buy the tablet division since they don't want WebOS, and they can probably design a tablet with hardware just the same as HP, but maybe more expensive since HP has the hardware connections. Just saying... would you buy a car from Saturn after GM declared they were going to scrap the entire brand? By law, car makers have to support discontinued cars with parts and service for a decent amount of time... I'm not sure if there are any laws that will make HP service and maintain their tablet. Considering they are exiting the tablet, phone and pc business and turning into an IBM/CICSO business model, I doubt they will really care all that much to support them.

WebOS is a really great operating system. My phone uses it (Palm Pre Plus) I was really cheering for this tablet and it's dead four weeks after arrival.

Prepare for HPQ to be kicked out of the DOW, and AAPL to take it's place.

I understand that. The reason I bring that up is because you said (in different words) that there was no point purchasing a device that wasn't supported anymore. My point is that, if you install a different OS on the hardware, with something that is supported, it is a great purchase.
