HP 1.8Ghz Athlon, HD video-editing?

I got a HP 1.8Ghz Athlon, nice machine running Windows XP home. Should I upgrade to Windows XP (Pro) for any future HD editing? I have a Sony FX1, & will probably get Vegas 6.0

Should I have gone with a 3Ghz P4 machine? I still don't understand the tradeoffs between an Athlon & P4. I understand many yrs ago, there were compatibility issues for Athlon & video-editors. That swayed it in the favor of a P4 machine.

The recent Dust to Glory ("D2G") movie, was done on an AMD machine & Adobe Premiere Pro. Not what you would expect, i.e. an Apple & FCPro or a PC running Avid. I think they definitely wanted to be different.

I did a LiveWebcast from NAB, where D2G was everywhere:

AMD and intel are the same now.... AMD is a bit cheaper. I'm a developer so I use an average machine 2GHZ AMD, and I run premiere pro with RTX100, so I get all my dv project real time, even export to mpeg. for hdv it's slow, it can play hdv realtime but when I correct the colors, that's it, my old friends RENDER and PROGRESS BAR are joining the party. not that I don't like them but you had a taste of realtime edit it's kind hard to go back. those guys you mentioned for dust of glory, used a BOXX pc AMD, which rocks (not cheap) and premiere PRO. I've been with adobe all my life and I must say that Premiere Pro is now a solid and easy to use application. Tried AVID but I feel lost, yes the interface is nice but don't find it as easy as premiere pro of FCP.

I would update to XP PRO too. but more robust and flexible.

if I was you I would consider premierepro instead of vegas if you stay on pc.
it's written using the dotnet framework(probably C#) while premiere is pure C++, so will get performance with adobe.
I won't go into details but I must say that I was really surprised when installing the demo of vegas that I had to install the dotnet framework too.

anyway have a play and decide for yourself....

you should have gone for a mac G5. I sold my Pentium 4 3.06 a while ago and switched to Mac. Thank God I did.

Actually, I'm a Mac person. Have a G4/667 (circa Aug 2001), & just got a Powerbook 1.5Ghz (G4 based) earlier this year. I'm using the latter for in-the-field work.

Just got iLIFE '05, which comes with iMovie HD. I will eventually sprint for that $1299 3-pack combo: FCPro, Motion, xx.

Yeah, definitely I will get a G5 eventually. Or, should I wait 1 year for the new "Intel" Mac desktops?

What makes you say "Thank god I did"? Is it both the hardware AND software? I myself am not that familiar with PC..but surprisingly, getting used to it. I thought the PC has caught the Macs, in terms of useability.

I actually attended the presentation by Jacob Rosenberg (?) in the Adobe booth, on how they did D2G on Premiere Pro. You can see some pics at:

I actually won a Premiere Pro book, written by him:

I always thought Adobe Premiere was beaten out by FCPro. But, maybe not?

Do they make Premiere Pro for Mac as well?

they used to do it for mac but since premiere pro, adobe have decided to stop the mac version... probable that it was hard to compete with FCP... I mean the 2 products are approximatly the same price. and fcp is developed exclusively for mac....

The Mac is very attractive especially when knowing final cut pro .Would open lots of editing oportunites that Vegas doesnt but I cant justify $10,000 to just start up and for that Im on a good system not a omg one.

Why would you need $ 10.000? A double G5 comes at 1.999,- Final Cut at 1.300,- 19'' Screens are being sold at something like 400,- each

You could get the full monty for lat's say 4.500,-. For me tha sounds liek a good start. Not to mention ebay.

well here we go I added 2gigs of ram two 400 gig hds, I wish you could do better configs on the apple site. Then I need final cut and then photoshop This doesnt include monitors . I would never just ebay got a production monitor for 250 that was bascially a boat anchor .
