Hows the noise on your GH2

Sell it. Buy another brand of camera or something that will make you happy.

Thats probably the short answer. Much like the banding issues I'm trying to see if any other GH2 owners are having the same concerns. Do they feel the GH2 is an improvement in quality over the GH13. I have filmed several productions with the 7d and T2i and always had an eye on the GH1 and jumped on it once it was improved with the hack, I will not go back to the problems one can have with Canons. I will still be happy with using my GH1 for now, but was really looking forward to all the GH2 had to offer.

Make sure you have the I.DYNAMIC (Intelligent dynamic range) set to off. it will adjusted contrast and exposure automatically when there is a big difference in brightness between the background and subject. Also make sure to shut off the I.RESOLUTION (Intelligent Resolution) it is used to add sharpness or detail and can add some artifacts. Set your LCD Mode to Mode 1 for brightness, Auto LCD mode will cause the brightness level to change on the screen.

Thanks rigs for the hints. i.Dynamic ad i.Resolution were both off. But the display was on auto. Now I got rid of that changing exposure (or display apparently). But the noise and blocks are still there.

I guess when the GH2 might be hacked (which we cannot count on) then it will be superior to the GH13. The resolution will then be better than on the canons. Not sure about the noise in the blacks though. Until then I will keep my GH2 locked up in the closet and use my 5Dmk2.

Thats too bad the GH2 imop is let down - The 24p is nice and I try to use it as much as I can, but some of my projects for broadcast need to be flmed at 29.97p which I can get from my GH1. To bad the GH2 only offers a 59.94i option with 17mbs the GH2 offers. Heres hoping for a FW crack real soon.

Hi rigs,

I noticed this same grainy noise the first time I started shooting with my GH2, and I had the same thoughts of returning it. I have previously been using a hacked GH1 and love its image. The GH2's noise is a huge disappointment and I prefer my hacked GH1. I still have my GH2 right now, but not sure what I will do.

My GH2 is very clean.
Look at pg 118 in the manual.
In lower ISO you want the NR setting -
Once you get over 640 is where I might use
NR in +
Any camera will produce noise/grain over ISO 800
If you are expecting no noise in higher ISO.....
Try all settings in -2 SMOOTH or CINEMA
All the other GH2 Modes seem to add some noise.
And make sure the I DYNAMIC & I RESOLUTION are off
turning these up can add noise/grain.

I'm incredibly happy with my GH2. Image quality is better in all respects. Personally, I like the grain structure of the GH2 as it seems more like film grain and less like digital noise. No more Fixed Pattern Noise, no more blue patches in skin tones, no more laborious pulldown removal, better image quality at high ISOs, HDMI output to monitor for focus, audio level meters, ETC mode(!!!!), Cinema film mode, better LCD and EVF, I'm extremely satisfied.

....I've said it before....but I love the grain pattern in the GH-2. It looks like film grain. It's much much finer than most DSLR/camcorder footage that I've seen. Skin color is the best I've seen also.

Hello All,

First of all Rigs, I love your style.

I didn't see any noise in the videos that you provided the link for: http://vimeo.com/user2239430/videos

Of course unless it was horrific I wouldn't expect to see such detail on vimeo, so I'll have to take your word on it because I've noticed higher than anticipated noise levels on my new GH2.

Have you read/heard about the ISO Bug?

I ran some tests and it appears to be true, but I am now just ingesting my footage so that I can look at it in CS5.

Here is a link that covers it in case any of you haven't seen it yet: http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1280/gh2-iso-noise-bug-at-320-640-and-1250/p1

BTW how did you light your guitar in the 2 videos (slider test and old friend)?

Thanks!
