How's the Andromeda doing?

In general I mean. I just haven't heard much about it lately. Anybody going for it? Sales doing well? Experiences? That sort of thing.

I was just thinking about it last night. Thanks for starting this thread.

I personally hope to have the money to Andromidize my DVX next summer.

I heard a rumor of a price drop in effect as of a couple months ago, but can't find it on the Reel-Stream website...Supposedly dropped $500? Meaning only $2000 for students, which would be pretty cool.

Other than that and the occasional clips posted by dvxuser Andromeda owners, I haven't heard much. The forums over there are informative, but kind of sporadic and sleepy.

I'm surprised we haven't seen more andromada footage here. I was thinking of andromedizing my dvx, wrote them an email, but didn't hear back. Who knows...

I am considering using an Andromeda/DVX/Movietube combo on my feature film. But its been pretty quiet concerning this beast. I expected at least one or two finished projects by now. All I've seen are test clips or brief snippets. I'm tired of test clips of everything. Let's see something finished :)

I've thought about going this route, but for the money you are probably better off selling your DVX and buying an HVX (with warranty, variable frame rates, etc.). IMHO they need to drop the price of Andromeda to make it a more viable option.

I was thinking about it, but the 4:4:4 color space and increased dynamic range of the Andromeda was real attractive to me. So far most HVX footage I've seen so far has left me cold. It just doesn't seem that much better than the DVX.

I'll be getting Andromeda in a few months. I have a countdown on my paychecks saved. I'll post some footage when I have it available. I won't let anyone down.

I still dont understand what it does. Its an HD component they install in a DVX100? What does it do? Interested but confused

The website probably explains it better than I can.

My understanding is that Andromeda channels exactly what the DVX captures -- BEFORE any compression for DV -- and exports it to a hard drive.

All you need to know is-

Andromedized DVX = Good.

Honestly though, check out the site and you will be able to get the scoop on all the details. It really is incredible...I wonder if an andromedized DVX would be allowed into Horrorfest. I dont see why not...

Yes but i still think they should drop the price. That would open a bigger market for them.

1000$ and linux version of sculptor. I wouldnt be able to resist.

I dare to say you haven't been looking at the right footage. The best stuff I've seen shot with the HVX200 simply blows away anything I've seen with the DVX.

I worked with the DVX for about two years and loved it. I got an HVX200 in May and, even though I'm still learning a lot to get the best performance I can out of this baby, the difference is most certainly there. Comparing 1080p or 720p DVCProHD HVX200 to DVX100 footage is quite an eye opener. The HVX200 looks FAR better. It's like comparing out of focus 16mm to modern Super 16mm. On an SD DVD, the differences are less pronounced but still quite noticible. My HVX200 footage is sharper, cleaner, and more colorful than any of my 16x9 DVX stuff and I'd had A LOT more experience with that camera than I do the HVX200 now. Add to that variable frame rates, a better lense, more lattitude, and a easier to color correct codec and it's really no contest. The DVX is a great camera but the HVX really is in another league as far as I'm concerned.

As for the Adromedia, I guess the jury is still out on that one. I recall that it was still in dispute whether it actually offered the lattitude advantages it claimed it did. 4:4:4 color space is great but it requires being tethered to a laptop and many people who have worked with it have indicated that the difference between it and 4:2:2 is neglible (though I can't comment since I havn't tried both).

I guess not then. Not trying to put down the HVX or derail this thread. Actually andromeda threads always get derailed. But that wasn't the intention. HVX is a fantastic camera. It's just not what I was expecting after all the hoopla.

But seriously how many times do we have to bring up the tethered thing? Besides, don't you have to stay close to a laptop or p2 drive to keep emptying those cards for the HVX?

Just get a small laptop and long cord. :)

So if I were to spend 3000 on Andromeda, I would still have to hook it up to a laptop? shoot, at that price, it should come with the laptop. and as far as the DVX and HVX, arent they in two different target areas when speaking of what we are trying to record? Or am I just a n00b at this

Actually it could come at what ever price the guys it reel stream would demand because no other would offer this.

On the other side, to high price and noone would want to pay for it.

Just the old rules of the free market. :)

yeah, all thoughts on time of time involved and materials needed aside (i have no idea whats involved in putting on together) $2500 for 4:4:4 HD is rediculously reasonable.

I've already made this identical post to identical responses, but again, other cameras with these features can easily cost $100,000. And for those who say why not just buy an HVX, since a DVX and Andromeda costs $5,000-6,000? Most of us already own a DVX and are looking to upgrade, so the cost of the dvx doesn't really count. And about voiding your warranty, my warranty expired several months ago so...

There are several things the HVX does that Andromeda cannot, and vice versa. Most notably the HVX's 16:9 chip and variable frame rates, and Andromeda's better color, latitude and sharper resolution.
