how'd they make waking life?

i would like to learn more about editing tricks / simple do-it-yourself special effects.

i like abstract, expressionistic, or otherwise psychedelic visuals. claymation and stop-motion are also very exciting to me.

i heard that 'waking life', as well as that early cartoony version of lord of the rings, were both made by painting on the film after filming actual real people.

my question is, in the absence of a large budget, how difficult would it be to perform that 'waking life' visual technique by yourself using a dvx, an editing program, and some paints?

yours,

I did a cheap version by having FCP spit out every film individually of a short, then imported them in to photoshop, ran a few filter on them and then reimported every frame in to FCP. Lucky for me the short was only 18 seconds long!

BenB did a nice tutorial. I linked to it earlier but deleted the post because the link in that thread to the tutorial was no longer there. He used FCP and it worked well. You might want to contact him and see if the tutorial is still available.

Unfortunately a few filters alone will not give you the exact look of Waking Life. Sure, you get that cartoonish look but the unique thing about Waking Life was the way the lines had this sort of free flow to them which went along with the whole dream sequence theme. You will need to rotoscope for that kind of control.

Take that guy's advice. No cheezy filter will ever stand up to quality animation.
