How YOU can help shape the Canon 5D Mark III

For those that think that Canon will dish the HD video from their dslr or the other extreme that we will see them putting all sort of accessories and functionality that might impede the photo usability of their camera are far off. Sure their are moaners (as always they tend to be more vocals than the vast majority) who will only complain about everything, sometimes they are founded grief but most of the times it is more about the frustration of their own inabilities to make good pictures. Seriously the level that digital photography is now, it is more of a case of the users that are the limiting factor than the cameras. As a pro photographer, I just can't bear anymore going on most of the photography forums because of the sh....t posters that you see there. The hybrid hdslr is here to stay, I am sure 20+ years ago some where saying that they did not want auto-focus etc. Once Canon just need to upgrade the photographic side as usual with some more resolution (rumored 24 megapixel), better low light, enhance dynamic range and 90% of photographers won't complain. Once the fundamental photographic principal are kept or enhance, you will find only a small minority of people who by nature are resistive to any change that will complain.

Canon has taken again a great lead in the number of dslr sold last year. With 45% vs Nikon 29%, as a Nikon shooter I can only guess that it is part due to the video part. Video for me is a much more important feature in the choice of a photo camera for me nowadays, that many people think. Even if it only one out of 4 customers that is a huge market. Canon wont abandon all the momentum they have had the last 3 years with the hdslr. It was almost free, with no competition. They will more probably do the normal thing, update the video incrementally. At first they will have to address the moire, aliasing and resolution thing. They will then perhaps change the codec and I hope at least a clean uncompressed 10 bit hdmi out. In the wildest dream, I would like them to surprise us with some even limited 2k raw output (1,2 ... minutes) but it is more a dream. For me it will be evolutionary rather than revolutionary. but I hope that we get at least the moire/aliasing free and hdmi output. Anything less would be too little after 3 years. The company which is really disappointing me is Nikon, I hope they react.
