B&H keeps getting it in stock for short periods of time (days at best) I think they are moving orders, just with a slight back order that never puts them "in stock". I'd call them and ask about it.
But of course call EVS first! ... Rush? Got Merlin?
Sorry, I guess the main point got lost in my title. The Limited Edition/Signature model -- where do I find that, or is that what B&H/EVS would be shipping for any Merlin order now?
I belive that ther "limeted edition" Merlins are what is shipping now. I don't know how big the run is/how long they will last, but I'm under the impression that that is what you will get if you buy one now. - But don't hold me to that.
Best bet would be call when you order and confirm that you are getting the limeted edition signature series model. - There is that "order now" element in there too of course, but I woubt they are out of them quite yet.
Of course the signature series has no 'operational' benefits over a "normal" one, thoguh you do get a nive padded case with it. - But it is cool to get a signed one and that certificate!
1. There's no rental place within hundreds of miles of me, so I can't try a Merlin.
2. I don't mind buying something that's in strong demand. If it doesn't work out, you can usually sell it for nearly what you paid. (I've actually sold some things for more!)
3. The Ltd. Ed. might have a slightly higher resale value than the regular one.
If it's true that all currently shipping Merlins are the Ltd. Ed., the dealers are doing themselves a disservice by not mentioning it in their descriptions.
Anyway, I've sent an email to Rush at EVS, so I'll post the answer as soon as I get it.
Mikko, I just called Steadicam, and you were mostly right. Here's what they told me:
1. They are trying to fill dealers' backorders, and hoping to finish filling them this month.
2. All Merlins shipping from SC now are the Ltd. Edition, which also includes a new version of the user manual and a DVD.
3. Most dealers won't know the difference between the old Merlin's contents and the new one.
4. Best bet, as you said, is to put in a backorder and assume it will be the special edition. But I guess there's no total guarantee, if the dealers don't even know what they're shipping.
In a case like this, Rush is probably a much better bet than an impersonal place like B&H. He can actually make sure you're getting what you want!
