How was the subject lit?

I'm having a hard time imagining how the subject was lit : http://i.imgur.com/lxzhXcI.png

How can her left cheek be lit but her upper right arm isn't? It just seems like in her position, if the light source were hitting her left cheek, it should also be hitting her upper right arm.

It might be if it was actually in front of her. I suspect that it (large soft souce) is actually in line with her, maybe a touch behind, and around 45 degrees up. With a large bounce from the right and a little in front. IOW, the light and the bounce are 180 degrees apart, and are largely just filling in and shaping shadows caused by the (huge) back light which might be natural light, IDK.

That's my guess. How'd I do?

Because you are cheating yourself a bit…

To get light on the cheeks just below the eyes, you actually need a pretty high light. A light set that high will not reflect as much if at all on the arms since the arms are at a vertical angle while the cheek bone presents an angle around 60 degress or so.

I'm on Pauls side here… they probably didn't light this and gripped their way out of it. So if anything was done beyond bouncing light it would be a nice big silk above and behind her and then some bounce in front. Sometimes subtracting and modifying light is more interesting than consequently dragging generators and lights out into the wilderness ;)

OP… also check out Peter Lindbergh who is a European fashion photographer. He does some pretty elaborate setups for photography…. including 4x4x4 black "boxes" on the beach and then lighting the model with HMI. Looks pretty damn good...
