he's been pretty hush hush about it when asked, so i figured someone here might know. he said it was done with AE's time remapping

Well, I don't know how *he* did it, but AFX and Shake both have very good time remapping tools. Also, as a general rule, to do slow motion effectively you need to shoot with a high shutter speed to get rid of motion blur.
