how to view footage?

I am in the process of upgrading to HD. I still am not sure what Camcorder to buy.
I like the HMC 150 for the inexpensive media: SDHC but not the workflow. Having to transcode the footage before it can be used effectively on the timeline for instance.

I use Edius 5 for my editing.

I don't want to use a Sony EX1/3 because of the rolling shutter issures. I shoot mostly outdoors and of moving subjects, specifically horses being ridden. I want to be able to video a horse working and then put the card from the camcorder into my computer and view the files in a way that allows me to go forward and backwards quickly. I am not sure if I can do this with the camera hooked directly to a HD tv. I would like to be able to do it in the same manner as scrubbing a timeline.

P2 would be good but the expense of the P2 cards is a factor for achival.

Any thoughts as to workflow. Is there any device that I could put the SDHC into and have it hooked to the TV and go forwards and backwards quickly? Sort of a deck for cards scenario.

Some Blu-Ray players have an SD slot that can play AVCHD cards; I don't know about fast-forward and rewind, but I imagine those would be available just like they would be to a DVD...

I have a Panasonic BR player, the DMP-BD30. It will read SD cards from the HMC just fine, and treats it just like a BR disk.

you can hook the camera up to a tv as well and play your cards back in it.

also the western digital medai player will play your files off of hard drive but i have read you need to change the file extension to .m2ts

Can you fast forward and rewind with a remote also on the panasonic player?

that would be the quickest to view files. No transferring. Put the card in the player and watch the video. that would solve several problems and keep the cost down.

I could then transfer the files at my leisure and transcode in order to edit the material in Edius 5. The HMC 151 is sounding better all the time.

The CORE AVC codec will allow you to play all the HMC files in Windows Media Player -- real time, full resolution -- perfectly. At $7 for a standard version and $14 for the "pro" version -- it's one of the best values I've yet encountered relative to the HMC.

With Edius 5 you may not need to transcode. I tested Edius 5 and if I remember correctly I edited PH mode HMC files in real time. Edius was the winner in terms of performance -- but it lacked the integration with Photoshop/Illustrator/After Effects that Premiere offers.

Go rent and play with a Sony EX1. After doing so you'll never consider purchasing anything with "Sony" printed on it ever again.

If you have a Sony PS3, it will play the files with no problem. Either via an SDHC USB port () or via a network connection to a media server

I downloaded the core codec. And the files do play fine in WMP or VLC. But it will only play one file at a time. So after every clip I have to select another clip. Is there a way to stitch them together and play say ten minutes at a time?

not since the firmware upgrade- now it can read .mts as well as .m2ts. Just pop the SDHC into a card reader and connect it to the WDMP and you are good to go
