How to use the META Data on Clips??

Anyone out there know how to use meta data on our P2 Clips?
And if so, what benefit do we get by using it? Does it help with searching for clips in the future?

Thanks

Have you downloaded the P2 Viewer program? It lets you view and set the various metadata fields; look through what's possible and you'll see there are tons of possibilities.

Ok cool looks like a nice tool! Now FCP doesn't seem to be able to import that meta data? Is there somthing I have to do to make that funtcional?

Yes -- nag Apple to provide proper MXF support. Right now Apple doesn't support the metadata at all. Send them an e-mail asking them to implement MXF timeline support at least as good as Canopus has. The more of us who nag them, the more likely we'll get it!

Barry...I think you provided a link once to Apple to provide suggestions. I used it. Perhaps it should be posted here.

Hi Barry:

Just downloaded the P2 Viewer and am running it on a brand new HP laptop. Is there a manual or on-line instructions on how everything in the P2 Viewer software works? How do you actually change the metadata? The memo field?

Thanks,

Dan

There's no documentation that I know of, it's all do-it-yourself. But just double-click the fields in the metadata and you can change most fields; some are set in stone by the camera, but others are user-changeable.

Barry.. the P2 viewer for the PC.. Did that come on the CD with the camera and or the P2cards? If not, where would I download it and also find the serial number for the camera?

Thanks for all of your help man.. You saved my butt on the p2store.. I can't wait to show my dvxuser brothers some of this footage.

This camera is kicking ass and taking names. Everywhere I go.. seems that someone comes up going nutty over the thing... and the results are so friggin baddass. I never ever ever ever want to shoot tape again. I know if I was shooting tape yesterday I would have missed half of the great footage I got... So refreshing to hit the record and have it start right away. I think my XL1 takes probably atleast 5 seconds before it begins to record.

Thanks bro!

Glad to help, and I hear you -- I totally echo your sentiments. The more I shoot with it the more impressed I am with it -- it's phenomenal. And tapeless rules -- there is no going back.

And, don't forget, you can put it in pre-rec mode so it's actually recording BEFORE you hit the record button! :)

P2 Viewer is not on the CD, but it's freely downloadable from Panasonic's site, the link is listed in the manual like five different times in the manual so you can always look it up there. http://panasonic.biz/sav/p2/index.html

Serial number is under your viewfinder.

Post some footage!

Thanks Barry. I feel like I should be paying you a monthly tech support... and/or certainly offering to take you out for some grub and beers if you ever come to Orlando. Same for Jared and my other DVX bros. Quite a group of misfits and artists and all-around-good joes.

My wife complained that I'm spending too much time with my camera.... just hoping I don't have to choose.... sex with an inanimate object.. even this cam might get a little stale... Plus unsavory for anyone else to use afterwards! heheh
