How to use multiple bounces to redirect light through tight spots (Pictures)

Lighting a wikieup (Apache dwelling) for a dwelling a feature we are shooting in Tombstone, AZ right now. Someone maybe interested.

Pretty slick idea, so is the sun hitting the lower bounce, which reflects it upwards to the top one, then back down in through the top of the hut. Just wondering, is this to maintain the same color temp? Why not just shoot an hmi through the top? I'm guessing power issues? or possibly heat? Can you explain why you went this route? Either way it's really neat.

The bottom board is a mirror board the top board is hard side down. To get the intensity we would have needed we would have needed a 6K HMI (minimum) and possibly a 12k to give us the same amount of light as the rig. Sa as you can see this is far lighter and faster than rigging trussing and running 220V power for big lights.

The shot was an outside in, so we had to really bring up the light inside the wikieup so we could expose the Apache's inside while not overexposing the exterior. As you will notice, the speed rail track on the ground was rigged with a slider dolly so the camera could slide from 20 feet outside to completely inside the hut.

Not using a heliostat? Something like this might be useful. Track the sun and keep it focused where you need it without constant repositioning by hand. And it's cheap.

So what was the intensity of the light inside of the hut? What stop at what ISO where you able to get (Or if you metered it, what was the FC level?). Pretty cool set. Thanks for sharing.

Clever. The ground level bounce does the tracking and the top bounce can stay still....

Bruce: I was going to be snarky and say that can't be cheaper than a grip, but I checked out the website and by gum you're right - it is cheap! Kinda cool.

I was going to say that this looks like a play book from the Egyptians... well, at least one theory on how the tunnels in the pyramids and tombs were lit without using sooty torches...

Archemedes was said to have started the Roman vessels afire via mirrors... for nearly 2300 years many have tried to repeat the process... the TV Show "Myth Busters" attempted and claimed it to be a 'myth'... ah, but enter in MIT students with no social life and... ey wala...

Oh ive done something crude.
i took a mirror as big as an ipad, bounced the light to a piece of paper to light the face of our subject.
