Hey,

Really glad I found this site. I bought a Canon 7D last week, with some goodies.
I am completely new to this (HDSLR Cinematography)

I dont think I can afford a field monitor yet, so I was wanting to use my MacbookPro as an external monitor in conjunction with Adobe OnLocation software. I simply dont know how. I get the pluggin in part, but Im not sure what cable I should be using, Im doubting its the usb 2.0 cable. I did buy an HDMI to mini HDMI, but Im not sure how to get it to work. If I need to change some settings in the Mac or not.

Can someone please help me and explain to me what I need to do? What cable to run, settings in laptop etc.

Thank you so much for your help.

HDMI would only work if you capture the signal using a dedicated capture device (MX02, Intensity Pro Shuttle etc.) as there is no other way of getting the signal into the computer.

Your best bet is to use the EOS utility in live view mode using the USB cable, but it isn't that great. It slows to less than 12fps and it most definitely isn't HD. A field monitor is the best solution in this case, but it is also probably one of the more expensive options.

I understand a field monitor would be the best option, but a decent monitor starts at 500.00 and a nice monitor is 1k or more. I will be buying one in the future, but I want to use my macbook pro for now. I was on a green screen shoot, where a friend of a friend had a 7d and ran his cable to his 17" macbookpro (the exact gear I have) then he opened up Adobe OnLocation and used that as his external monitor, so I know it can be done. If he could answer a text or phone call, I would not be asking you. If anyone can easily tell me what cable and if I have to change settings in mac to view live video, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Let me know the outcome! I am interested in doing the same thing.

Also, I have been reading about these new external monitors called by a company called Lilliput. I heard they are decent and only cost around 200 dollars.

If you have Adobe On Location then it works with Firewire cables, not sure about USB though. EOS Utility is the bet bet with Canon DSLR's, but it does not work with Lion OS at the moment (Canon said they would fix it in the 1st 1/4 of 2012).
