How to use JVC minidv cam corder as deck?

I was wanting to use this minidv camcorder as a way to transfer my footage via firewire. I tried setting the "deck configurations" manually to firewire / ohmci ---> "generic" - Dv Basic Device NTSC or DV Device. But I am unable to have Avid recognize that there is even a deck connected via firewire. Is this normal. I assumed Avid would be able to capture footage from any minidv camcorder. My computer itself is recognizing that I have a camera plugged in as it asks me if I want to transfer footage (probably via something like Windows Movie, etc.). Can anyone give me a heads up about this. Thanks.

It's a cheap minidv camcorder, this is the one I tried connecting and having avid recognize: http://www.amazon.com/JVC-GR-D350-MiniDV-Camcorder-Optical/dp/B000E1332C

Are you hooking the deck up thru the firewire port on a mojo or adrenaline? I would suggest not. Hook it up to a seperate firewire port on the computer. Make sure in capture you select HOST1394, or in the timeline next to the VU meter click on DNA purple button then select HOST1394. From there, if your "deck" is configured correctly you should just be able to use CAPTURE to digitize.
