How To Upload P2 Cards to Macbook Pro?

It's been a long time - how do I upload P2 cards to my Macbook? I have a Macbook Pro with ExpressCard slot, a P2 adapter to fit that slot. I do NOT have P2CMS nor can I find it on the web anywhere. I will be posting in FCP. Thank you!

Hi Adanac

Depending on what your OS is, you may not get that expresscard to P2 adapter to work on the latest MBP, may I suggest if you strike trouble, bite the bullet and get a Panasonic single slot reader,(AJ PCD2) it connects with 2xUSB works great on Leopard /Snow Leopard etc.
It's a tad over priced and slow transfers but its the cheapest / best solution out there.
or just connect the camera direct, and use that, will cost you nix.

I have to confess I don't know what an MBP is, although it sounds vaguely related to baseball. I'm using OS 10.6.7.

"Euston we have a problem comes to mind" , I suppose we all had to start somewhere, maybe best to checkout the online tutorials or find a "Video Friend" near you that can help you thru the process.

What if I don't want to use FCP to offload? I have:

Macbook Pro with an ExpressCard slot
OS 10.6.7
P2 card adapter

Is there a a sticky or instructional somewhere that shows EXACTLY what software I need and EXACTLY how to do it? I don't want to have to interpret how to do it from a tutorial that's for people with FCP or with a Lenovo computer or hooking up from camera. I wish to correctly upload ALL the necessary files to a drive for delivery.
It's hard to imagine Panasonic has continued to allow this to be so arcane.
Many thanks in advance!

You need to follow this tutorial for correct and flawless workflow:

exactly what kind of "P2 card adapter" do you have?

FWIW, you DONT USE FCP to offload.

Steve, if you're saying that the only way to do it correctly and flawlessly is by buying FCP 7 (as the article you've linked to says to) then there will be a lot of disappointed HVX owners out there. I don't have FCP 7 nor do I intend to purchase it any time soon. I just want to upload the footage from my HVX and give it to the client.

Adanac,

I have seen you post quite a few questions recently and realize you are just getting started. Here are a few suggestions to jump start your learning curve. Read every sticky in every subject category on DVXuser. It is a treasure trove of usefulness. Get the Barry Green book about the HVX-HPX series of cams. It is a short encyclopedia about video and every feature of the P2 handycams and P2. If you don't have it, get the online manual from Panny. It is located on the same general site as the link I gave to you for P2CMS.

Don't be intimidated by all the alphabet jargon, it will come to you quickly. If you do a bit of research for yourself before asking questions, you'll get better quality help and lots of it.

A lot of this info seems to be from several years ago... is it still current as far as Mac users are concerned? Regarding write-protection, is that just a simple matter of sliding the 'protect' tab on the P2 card itself?

yup!

there is a lot of talk about best practices for transferring P2. there are basically two camps. use a software tool or just drag and drop / copy and paste.
ive never had a problem with either. but i find drag and drop by far the simplest and most straight-forward for new users.

and not to open a can of worms that has been open and closed repeatedly. but ive never ever write protected a card. and ive also never had any problems...

Totally Agree,
Copy/paste, Drag / drop, that's what i've used for many years now with all my Mac systems, (and two windows boxes) never used the "write protect" method. that seems to me to have been something that happened to someone in the P2 test phase, and Pana's "Windows only" attitude in those early days, that has changed in recent years they have realised there's lots of pro's and non pro's P2 users , use Apple products.
Jan kept mentioning this (Write protest Apple issue) in many posts, for newbees it's advised , but when your up to speed on P2 , that's not needed.

Cheers
