i would stay away from ANY drive brand you can buy at staples/office depot kinds of places. this includes western digital, lacie, buffalo, maxtor, etc.
some people love them and have had no troubles but lacie drives have the highest failure rate of any drives out there. i have owned two lacie products and both corrupted my data. i have also heard numerous complaints about western digital (especially the "mybook" line)
i would choose drive manufacturers who specialize in products for the production industry. caldigit, promax, glyph and owc just to name a few. i dont think ive heard of ANY failures from these guys that resulted in data loss.
i get nearly ALL my drives from owc (www.macsales.com) im a big fan of their "mercury elite" single drive and RAID products and normally choose the "quad interface" option (usb, fw400, fw800 and eSATA)
here is a link to their products.
