How to transfer large files from Mac to PC (outside network)

Today Im dealing with 2GB's, so a USB stick will work. But potentially I'm talking about a hundred gigs of P2 footage, and since the Mac and PC are in two different locations, I cannot just hook them up with a USB or firewire or anything like that. Mac configured ext hard drives don't work.

Any ideas? Are there like dual formatted external hard drives?

Thanks

just put "macdrive" ($50) on your windows machine. and it will be able to see your mac drive

FAT32 won't work as I need more than 4 gigs... the HPX breaks up files at 4. something for long takes.....

What exactly are you planning to do? If you're referring to "long takes" after you stitch clips together in, say, Log & Transfer, keep in mind that you need to be careful as to what codec you use, because there are a number of things which won't work in Windows (such as AIC), and more which will require extra software. Just a consideration to keep aware of.

wgzn: Thanks. I'll keep that option in mind.

David: I want to upload all my P2 cards footage onto my mac, then save them onto my PC based client's computer.

Seriously check out MacDrive. I use it all the time and it makes things a lot easier. No problem using P2 footage, as the cards are FAT32 formatted, but the only problem could be in formatting larger hard drives (i.e. larger than 30GB or so) into FAT32.

Well, if all you're doing is copying the Contents folders over, then FAT32 works fine. That's the format of a P2 card, so you wouldn't have any problems with file sizes.

I don't really understand your problem. As I see it you need to dump footage to an external hard drive and have it be readable in both your mac and your pc? Just format your external hard drive as FAT32, and copy your cards over to it. This drive will be readable on your Mac and your PC.

Where you will run into problems is having FCP use this drive as a scratch drive since it cant write files larger than 4gb to it. The P2 cards are all FAT32 so any file longer than 4gb is internally spanned and then put back together when you are doing log/transfer. So if you have a long take and try to have FCP log and tranfer it and safe the scratch folder in a FAT32 hard drive it will crash.

OK thanks guys. Just to confirm, I can copy a MXF file that's bigger than 4gb from my Mac onto a FAT32 ext hard drive, correct?

Not editing anything off of the ext hard drive, just purely using it as a transport.

I also find paragon NTSF to be great to have on my mac... I can format and write to NTSF partitions, which make delivering footage to my windows clients so much easier as I can just use a native PC partition scheme on their drives.

Unless you did something to it, like stitch files together, there won't be any MXF files bigger than 4GB. That's all the bigger they get when recorded by the camera.

fat 32 is a LESS stable system and be warned I was in the middle of backing up files from my pc-through external drive (fat 32 formatted) to Mac and the drive crashed and lost a LOT of footage and data.
