how to transcode avchd into xvid?

Xvid format is less compressed and suited better for AE CS5. Some said convert to uncompressed then xvid. Is there easier way?

I thought xvid was a delivery format and not used as an editing format due to poor quality and sync issues.... But there are converters. Convert it to DV-AVI Type II. There may be some freeware ones around as well.
