how to tell if you actually shot 24p-advanced.

Hey guys, I recently shot a promotional film in France. I shot everything on a 24p advanced setting, and checked the scene dial almost all of the time to make sure all the footage was being recorded on the correct scene setting (F6). However, I got home the other day, took a look at the camera and the scene dial was on F5!!! Oh no! I am wondering if there is any way to confirm if you’ve captured at 24pa or not? Perhaps in post? Hopefully the scene dial just got nudged when I was packing it away.

You will have to check it on your N.L.E. 24Pa will only have one "judder frame" The 24Pn will have two. 8)

I forgot to add that would be for every 5 frames! 8)

Will Display Options on Playback help in this case?

No I do not think so. I just went through a tape and could not find anything that showed me what I shot in. 8)

Don't have the camera in front of me, but there's a button that changes the type of timecode display. One of those options shows what mode you shot in. I am 99% sure it shows "60i" or "24P", but I don't recall if it shows 24P differently than 24PA. Definitely worth a try though.

Bary, you are correct. The timecode counter button does show if you shot at 24pa. Thank you! Turns out all my footage is ok, i must of nudged the scene dial when packing. Man, sure would like a dvx-100a, times like these when that dial protector would help out!

Take care-

Rhydon where is this time code button? How do you get to it? Thanks!

Elvis, open your LCD, look at the bottom row of buttons, its the one farthest to the left, above it says COUNTER. When playing back footage, push that button and cycle thru the various timecode readouts, one of them displays the framerate (24p,24pa) and its frames (1,2,3)- A truly remarkable feature that i never knew existed!

I wasnt sure about this one but vaguely remember seeing it :P That's why this place is here! So we can all somehow "figure it out!" :)

Re: how to tell if you actually shot 24p-advanced.

One day I accidentally pressed the counter button, didn't realize it, and got real concerned that my time code was screwed up. Almost posted to ask how to fix it. How embarrasing.

Re: how to tell if you actually shot 24p-advanced.

yeah.. the data track on the tape records a whole whack of good data.. including Frame rate, scened setting, Exposure settings etc.

Re: how to tell if you actually shot 24p-advanced.

Daniel, after my incident that is exactly what i did. I set both 5 & 6 as 24pa- with exactly the same settings. A good idea if doing alot of unpacking/packing of the camera. Or you could just go buy a 100a......oh im feeling the need, i wish i had the money for one of those! Saving up for the movietube tho.

Take care-

Re: how to tell if you actually shot 24p-advanced.

If you've already dubbed over your tapes, you can use Vegas to check the pulldown cadence for you. In Options, set "Allow pulldown removal when opening 24p DV" to on. You have to do this BEFORE importing the files. Set the Media Pool to "Detailed". Right in the Media Pool click to view "Video Format". Import your files. In the Media Pool, under Video Format, it should read "DV (removing 2-3 pulldown)" for 24p standard footage, and "DV (removing 2-3-3-2 pulldown)" for Advanced footage. Footage without pulldown will simply read, "DV". Hope this helps.
