How does one do an exact timecode sync on two Pannys? One is a 100 and the other is a 100A.

I tried it by reseting the running timecode manually, but within a couple of minutes it was out of sync by several frames. Thanks

Free-run. That's the one where it just keeps running even when you're not recording right? That's the one we used, so that if we turned our camera off or stopped recording we would have the same code. But I can't get it exact; is that possible?

Theorictally, YES. In practice, no.

I've noticed that with my cameras that the timecode tends to drift. For example, I was shooting a pageant in which I synced the cameras the night before and then when I captured the footage it was out of sync. But it was only a few seconds (I think 1.5 sec. to be exact.) out of sync. And it remained that way for the entire shoot. But maybe that is more due to the fact that I set them the night before rather then right before the filming began. (I tend to want to be prepared, and would rather set them before I'm on location, as there are enough other things to tackle when filming events.)

Sounds like you may have had one in drop-frame and the other in non-drop-frame. That'll definitely cause them to drift.

You can't LOCK timecode between two Panasonics, but you can start them in frame-accurate sync and keep 'em running in mostly-sync. They may drift a bit throughout the day, but it certainly shouldn't be a lot.

I'll have to double check, and make sure that they are both in DP. But I thought that putting them both in F6 would override what they were in and set them both to DP. Thanks for the tip.

I've tried searching for a new clue and Barry, I have your book and I've triple checked that my setting are correct but whenever I go to free run there's always about a 7 minute difference the running timecode numbers.

I'm in 24PA mode
DF
Both Cameras are set to start at 01:00:00:00
I've even checked the clock to make sure both cameras are the exact same :)

What am I missing that would cause this offset?

put the 2 next to eachother put in freerun and then reset with the remote control, you will have them sync. Don't stop the camera while recording though.
good luck

You did nothing wrong. Without time base synchronization camera can drift quite a bit. There is no way to lock time bases on these cameras so they will drift. Sometimes up to a second or more in short period of time but usually at least 5-15 frames just because, especially if you remove the power supply and replace it. But also simply from starting and stopping recording.

Wow - I feel like an idiot.
I realized what I was doing wrong. For some reason it didn't click to me to actually put it in FREE RUN BEFORE you set the start timecode on all cameras.
It's working now like everyone has said, very small drift over time and punch-ins, but still makes it nice when capturing.
