How to Set Macro Range and Forum Search Parameters

Doing more experimenting (and reading) with new HMC40. The PDF manual has references to "macro-range settings" (i.e. page 89 under item number 30 says "When the focus control is set to a macro range...." and also says "When using a macro range for the focus control zooming may cause the image to become unfocused"). However, I can't find anything that explains how to "set to macro range." Does HMC40 just automatically set itself to macro range focus for close up work or is there a menu setting for macro range that I have overlooked (in one of the three menus)?

Also, in searching forum for info on macro range setting I could not see under advanced search if there is a way to limit search to HMC40 forum?

These are things beginners like me who look to manuals to explain things wrestle with---I found the camera does automatically set itself to macro range (at least when in full auto mode) verified by the viewfinder reversing black and white of AF or MF when I moved camera closer and closer to an object ( as those of you familiar with camera of course know). Since camera just automatically focuses on close up objects why do I care if it is macro range or not--why does it "tell" me it is in macro range? Are there other settings that also automatically change when camera goes into macro range so I need to be aware camera is in macro range?

If I understand this correctly, would it be less confusing if manual said "HMC40 will automatically adjust to a macro focus range when focusing on an object within 6 inches to 10 inches (or whatever range is) of the lens" rather than say "When the focus control is SET TO a macro range.." implying operator has to SET something. My suggested wording is more to confirm my understanding than to critique the manual.
