How to send large files over web?

Hey guys.... I have a 3.52GB file that I have to send out. What's the best way to do it? I have a Hotfile account but the max is 2GB as well as Vimeo which has the same size limit.

Thanks

I'd do a direct transfer from your computer to the recipient. On a mac, you'd enable web sharing, put the file in your sites folder and then send them a link with your ip number. A lot of webhosts won't allow you to upload anything bigger than 2 gb.

Sign up for a Pro account on Screencast.com

It's less than $10 a month and you get 25GB of storage, 200GB of bandwidth, and you can password protect files. We've been using it for 2 years and never had a problem with it. We use it for file delivery/client approval of spots.

If you go with the free account you're limited to a total of 2GB of online storage, but if you go Pro I don't think they limit how big of a file you upload (up to 25GB, which is your maximum storage space).

I can't find a file size limit on their site - where did you see it?

If you're a Mac user, go with idisk, its very useful, first 2 or 3 months (not sure), is free.

If you decide not to upgrade or do a computer to computer and the end user has Quicktime Pro or any editing program you can cut you file in half and upload in two chunks. They can then assemble at their end. That being said it might be time to upgrade to Pro account with any of the awesome options available in this modern connected world we live in.

Just install AIM,YAHOO,MSN, etc and send it directly assuming they have one of them chat programs. I sent a 1gig file through AIM once and it took about 15 mins.
Or the other alternative is making it a torrent file.

I use Trillian personally to send any size file to whomever I want.

try dropbox.

Not sure how big you can go but that's what we use for passing files to each other at work.

burn the file to a dvd and send via messenger? sorry :-)
You can send files via ichat as well but you need a fast adsl line.
even with skype it should be possible.

For files that large, I would put it on a USB stick and just mail it. It'll be there the next morning without the hassle of uploading for hours and them downloading for hours and if it doesn't work you have to start over.

MSN sucks when it comes to file sending. It's (probably deliberately) slow and you can't send all kinds of files. Archives like zip and rar doesn't work.

If you really want to send the files over the internet you could also create a two part archive and send them one by one, but like I said, your best option for that size is probably to just mail a USB stick.

We had A LOT of issues like this with Marianne because my editors were on the other side of the country and we had to give up trying to send over the internet all together. It just wasn't practical.

There are free, cross platform file splitters that will help out. There are lots of free services that will let you send 1 or 2 GB services

Zip your file. Use a file splitter to split it into 1 or 2 gb chunks, and send those individually. The person on the other end can download the same program, rejoin the files, and unzip.

Winrar does this.

Hey Jay! Check out http://www.getalink.com. I actually work here with the guys, and being a video producer I can tell you flat out it's the easiest way to send large files online up to 4GB for free. No e-mail, nothing. Just please, help spread the word! (And use it for smaller transactions as well so the stats don't only show large ones. ;) I hope you like it!

I know a few BBC people use www.wetransfer.com, so I gave it a go and have used it since, works great, it's free, it doesn't require you creating a login, the free service is 2gb size, but I'll just split bigger files into a multipart zip or such like and send as a couple of messages.

I second wetransfer, and if you purchase their Plus account ($120/yr) you can send up to 10GB per transfer, and holds 50GB total.

I've used DropSend for a long time, up to 5 sends per month free , 5gb limit per send. Very dependable. I tried WeTransfer several times, upload always failed for me.

Mega.co.nz

It is free, it is fast, it is easy to use, and you get 50GB of space. It also has security options to make files private.
