How to recover damaged P2 clips?

Sorry if this question's redundant, but I can't seem to find an answer anywhere else. Also I'll apologize in advance for a long description of this problem, but I want to try to articulate it clearly.

I managed to damage the tail end of about 90 minutes straight capture of a live performance (a celebrity roast/variety show). This was my own stupidity, which I'll explain before posing the question, just in case the explanation of what triggered the damage may help in solving the problem.

This was the second act, which ran from one P2 card to another. It was a long show, and as a song ended my battery was dying, so I swapped batteries during audience applause. As it turns out, it was the final song. I probably would have had enough power to capture the last minute or so of thank you and good night and wouldn't have needed to swap. That's the background.

Now to describe my foolish mistake.

Since I have sometimes in the past made a quick battery swap, turned the camera back on and hit record before it was ready to function, I have been caught a couple times with the camera still on pause while I thought I was recording. So ... I'd shut off the camera and was putting it away, when that thought hit me.

To quickly reassure myself I'd actually recorded the last portion, I hit the Rec Check button, just as I'd done so often when shooting on mini-DV before switching to P2. I think I hit it twice before it hit me ... that button simply backs up the tape drive. And ironically, I still had a tape in there 4 months after going totally P2.

When I attempted to upload the approximately 200 minutes of footage to Final Cut from my camera, it wouldn't take the continuous second act which spanned the two cards. Eventually it occurred to me to pull out card 1 and see if I could upload card 2. That caused the continuous clip to break into segments, and I was able to download the bulk of Act 2 that way, from both cards.

However I'm missing the climactic moment, the rousing finale, the last minute of the final song. It's on one of the clips that registers the stop sign and exclamation mark in the log and transfer window (see attached screen shot). In the HVX200 view finder I get a white clip with an X in a yellow box and an exclamation mark in a pink box.

I also tried doing the transfer through a P2 card reader and as direct file transfer into a PC laptop in case it was just a camera transfer glitch. No luck there, but I did get a file size on the last two clips. They're each 32KB, which I figure is the size of the icon in the log & transfer window.

I've heard it's possible to recover data from a P2 card as long as it hasn't been recorded over yet, which I haven't done. At least not intentionally, unless the Rec Check button had exactly that effect.

So again with apologies for being long winded ...

Is it possible to recover these two files?

If so, how?

Thanks

Please write protect the cards ASAP. Any manipulation through L/T or other where the card is not write protected will do further damage. Just because you're not filming to the card, does not mean nothing is doing a Volume Check/DiskRepair/Spotlight Search Index Do not use the cards if there is empty space on em, you'll be overwriting data. Looks like your cam never completed writing the tail end of the file.

END of DISCLAIMER:

After you do all this (write protect the card), could you output the file-structure on the card in question.

There are a few folders/directories like CLIPS/VIDEO/AUDIO inside the CONTENTS directory.

The Icon in the Log and Transfer is a BMP file on the card (just a still thumbnail). Located in ICON directory, those are 16KB a pop (not 32kb).

You're most interested in (in this order)

1. P2/CONTENTS/VIDEO/CLIPNAME.MXF
2. P2/CONTENTS/AUDIO/CLIPNAME00.MXF (00,01,02,03) - postfix to CLIPNAME for audio channel number.
3. P2/CONTENTS/CLIP/CLIPNAME.XML

(the thumbnail you're seeing is P2/CONTENTS/ICON/CLIPNAME.BMP)

And the sizes on those where CLIPNAME is the unique 6 digit name.
Then take a look and see if the MXF filesize is appropriate while the XML is missing or indicating improper length or the wrong clip name.

Basically your camera failed during a write operation to the card. Whether the DATA or the the definitions on where the data is are incorrect.

Meaning something may say, there is only 1sec of footage there, while there is 10 minutes (like the XML)
Or it may say 10 minutes, while the MXF and the FAT32 filesystem report otherwise.

I don't think its a FAT32 filesystem failure, but rather the MXF structure/metadata failure.

------

If you do a "Get Info" on the volume when the card is mounted, what does Mac OS report as free space/used space on the card?

Just because L/T in FCP report something DUMB does not mean its all gone, L/T and the In Camera thumbnail viewer don't really like "bad data"
and don't know how to handle it - so they just thow up an error. By bad data I don't mean corrupted DVCPRO HD streams, just sillly stuff like XML file errors (HUMAN READABLE in TextEdit).
Or LASTCLIP.TXT missing or other snafu.

If indeed the 00XXXX.MXF in the VIDEO folders are missing, then the entry for them was deleted, while CLIPS/ICONS still exists, then you need a FAT32 recovery tool.
Does not look like they are from the L/T window you posted, but it's pix is too small for me to read - also missing is the preview window from the L/T screen-shot.

Hi Jan,

There are 3 thumbnails in the camera viewfinder. One is a complete clip with a piano player icon. The second and third are blank. No 2 has an 'X' and an exclamation mark, No 3 has an 'X' only. (See attached picture 6 from my iPhone)

There are four thumbnails in the Log & Transfer window, as shown in the jpg I posted with my initial inquiry.

Thanks DJ,

You've given me lots to think about and examine here.

I'm pretty sure my camera did write the tail end of the files properly and I screwed it up by hitting the Rec Check button, triggering some sort of confusion between the tape and P2 operations.

Following your advice I have engaged the protect feature on the card.

I've examined the contents directory, and am attaching a screenshot here (Picture 4).

The contents list indicates both my XML clips and BMP icons are 32 KB.

My good video clips are 3.98 GB and my damaged ones are 32 KB, which again, I assume means all I have is the icons (albeit at 32 rather than 16 KB).

Regarding your last comment about the preview, it simply says Preview unsupported for this format (Picture 1).

Now I start to really lose hope as I do the rough mathematics on the 32 GB card itself. The Get Info window shows 9.45 GB used (picture 8). The two good clips use up almost 8 GB and I assume all the other stuff adds in another 1.5 GB.

Mind you I'm only missing about 2-3 minutes footage total, and the critical portion is the minute or so that went AWOL from video clip 0003SH.MXF

I'm not familiar with FAT32 recovery tools, but a quick Google search shows a dozen or more.

Do you have any recommendations? And bearing in mind the above info, will it even merit the effort?

Hi,

I am assuming that you have write protected your card when inserting into the Apple computer. If not, there might be the begining of the problem.

But before you go rearranging things, please contact Panasonic Broadcast Service and ask for guidance. Something indeed has gone wrong, I don't believe it is the camera.

One last idea is to put the card back into the camera, go to the thumbnail mode and do a repair clip. This is under the operation menu.

Best,

Jan

Hi Jan,

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Sometimes it comes down to semantics ... I'm desperately trying to recover damaged clips and missed the obvious solution ... REPAIR CLIP.

I went to the thumbnails in the camera viewfinder, clicked on the blanked out clip and did a repair. REPAIR CLIP was greyed out and wouldn't work, but REPAIR CLIP (LOOP) did work. The icons restored in the thumbnails and I was able to upload to my computer through the Final Cut Log&Transfer window. It was a slow process with the beach ball spinning for a while, but it worked.

I've got my footage back and I'm a happy camper.

Incidentally, I never did blame this on the camera. I'm still convinced it was my stupidity, pushing the Rec Check button in a panicky moment and confusing the tape and P2 sides of the 200. Love the camera ... love the P2 system ... even more now that I've benefitted from the REPAIR CLIP operation.

Thanks also to DJDecay for thoughtful analysis.

ciao

When I tried to log and transfer some footage into FCP 7 a couple clips would not allow me to transfer because the were spanned or partial spanned. I renamed the clip on the log and transfer window and then my clip on the P2 card went grey, had an X over it and I couldn't see the clip. I used the clip (loop repair) function (as the normal clip repair option wasn't available) and I got back only 20 minutes of the clip with an exclamation point with a purple background in the upper right of the clip. When I did the loop repair did it possibly give the clip a different MXF file name? About an hour is missing from the clip and if I can't get it back it's going to cost me $700. Did I possibly corrupt the MXF file or is the clips not spanned correctly between the cards now because of the rename? Please Help! I need this clip to be restored to the original.

hello, i'm in a similar situations. i accidentally pulled a card i was recording to. stupid i know. i off loaded it and drug it into fcp l/t and it seemed all right, although at the time i didn't try to tranfer it, i wrongly felt confident since it was detected. so i formatted it and used it again for the same event. later the client was trying to bring it in through L/t and it is just giving errors. if i could go back i would have repaired the clip in camera but that day is gone. anything one can do now.
