How to record separate mono tracks on HMC + an annoying audio hiss

hey all-

how do i record seperate mono tracks with the HMC? i am transcoding into Pro-res via FCP and it only wants to put the audio in stereo. this is creating a bit of a headache since the tracks are linked. how can i make them mono (or have them transcode as mono tracks)?

also, my audio is recording with a much louder hiss than i would like. I'm using a sennheiser wireless mic and the internal as back-up and the hiss is quite pronounced (compared with the dvx). what gives?

A stereo track shows up with the little triangles pointing to eachother on the audio tracks. To make them mono simply select the audio track and push OPTION - L this will unlink them and make them mono. To make them stereo simply select them again and push OPTION - L again.

thanks for the tip!

but why is the audio hiss so loud? there was never such a loud hiss when i recorded with the dvx. i can definitely hear it when i plug into the camera and it comes through in the final clips also.

what gives?

What are the settings of your wireless seinnheiser transmitter, receiver and the HMC?

Did you set the Mic input level at -50db or -60db? -60db will be more sensitive, but will also be more noisy.

No problem man!

Just remember to watch your audio levels. When you take a mono track and make it stereo it will be louder.

i haven't actually used my camera while plugged in yet, but i know from past experience with other cameras that 'dirty' power while plugged in can ruin your audio.

i know of a couple tricks to try to avoid that, like making sure all cables cross at 90 degrees and that they don't run parallel to each other, but i've never really found a way to totally get rid of that noise apart from running off of batteries only.

if it only happens while you're plugged in, then you know where the noise is coming from.
