How to record an electric guitar when I shoot it being played

Just use your ears. Nobody can tell you what will or won't work, there are too many variables.

The same as nobody can tell you over the internet how to frame a shot.

I could offer an alternative solution. Cubase 6 has stunning amp and cab simulation....pre amp then record clean then mess about with whatever sound you like in post. Some recording purists choke at this idea, until they hear results.
Sounds like he doesn't have the time to get into re-amping (hardware or softare) .. but if he did/does, taking
a DI track gives you more options in post (as you note).

Thanks groveChuck, it's a 73. I've had it forever. I recently got it refretted as I wore 'em down to fret markers! I don't play enough now either. Man, that 63 tele sounds right!
When we were 16, my best friend got a new blonde 73 just like yours (we were both Hendrix fans). I started playing soon after that.

My Tele is all original (cloth wire insulation!), needs work- microphonic bridge pickup, frets need filing or replacement, bridge needs work.
And I need a place to play or to get a computer/headphone rig.
I got it in 79 for $250 from a friend who got it from an old black man (no meeting at the crossroads was involved), so it's got some good mojo, I just need to play the damn thing more.
I mostly mess around on the acoustic.

As for you Shooter, don't forget to turn it up to 11!

Yep. I burned through a few Axis Bold as Love records lifting the needle to figure out Wait Until Tomorrow and Little Wing on that strat there. I had been playing a PRS for years then a couple of years ago I saw Clapton and Windwood and I just missed the sound of it. It needed work. That's when I brought it in for the fret job and a rewire (same pickups). Now the PRS lays fallow and I only play this... but alas, only a few studio things and sitting in with friends. The guitar wants me to go to a bar and play all night like the old days.

Hang onto that tele, Man. It sounds like a beaut!
