how to re-vamp the theater experience for the modern audiece

I know i know -it's the age of home theaters and dvds. but I STILL JUST LOVE GOING TO THE THEATER! Although I dont know if the new generation agrees with me. this has been probably argued many many time by hollywood anaylists, studio heads or what not,.....but aside from that . how should the system be re-wired to make the theater experience cool, fun and fresh again?? I saw king kong last night- and the demenor of the audience was a step under gloomy!(even though the movie ROCKED!!)But after watching 1920-30's America in Peter Jackson's epic, it just made me want to live in the age when the theater going experice was fresh and new in America, or where ever. I know there is an evolution happening- hometheaters--blu ray dvds--- living room entertainment PC's etc.... and not to metion piracy :undecided

What would you like to do - or suggest to do to re-vamp the system so the theater experience comes back again. Or is it just gonna die out slowly...(although there is this guy, thompson I believe , who is proposing to install a few thousand digital projectors within the Us and Canada in the next few years---surely opening up distribution doors for indies):undecided

so---what would you do , if you had the power, to re-vamp the theater experience?

If not, what do you think is the future for movie distribution?

thank you-- just very very curious and anxsious for the future of movies

Forget the giant megaplex joints with 20 screens.

Two Giant screens, more comfortable seating, balcony's, NO FREAKIN KIDS. And you have to dress up to get in like a fancy restaraunt. That'll keep the trash out.

I'd like to be able to smoke in the theater. Thats all.

and maybe have a steak dinner served to me too.

I think 3D cinema will change everything...

Right now, I think the only way for theaters to bring people in is if they re-vamp everything and not increase prices. That, and get rid of annoying ass kids who always **** up the movie experience. Also, cheaper popcorn and drinks.

One night a week: Parents night.

Show a family friendly (Still good for parents, just not a lot of violence or nasty) film once a week and encorage parents with smaller kids to come in and watch, with no embarassment for noisy kids. Your baby can cry, your kids can mess around in the aisles, etc.

It's a pain to be a newer parent and have to always get a baby sitter just to go watch a movie and it's something that I miss a lot. Pick the slowest night of the week and I guarantee they'd make more money after a year or two.

Even better: A daycare center for a couple of hours for the kiddies while the folks watch a movie.

Lowering prices would be good, but everything keeps costing more and more and more.

The tickets cost more because films are becoming or trying to become epics and rank in at higher prices. prices are higher so big budget flicks can make their money back and then some.

then there's nothing left for the theaters, and they're greedy, so up their prices go every so often.

The economics of movie theaters suck.

My proposal would be to have select theaters become the equivalent of a country club or a first class flight. Then people would take care of the theater, enjoy it more, and have more opportunities to see movies considering it'd be membership based, and food would be sold separately for the most part. I'd definatley enjoy that after working three days as an usher; people don't give a crap about theaters-they trash them, throw poop on the floors (not literally, though I have heard stories), and pretty much want a quick fix of bad cinema (people actually watch Just Friends) or in some teenage cases, a place to make out (some people do not actually watch Just Friends, as well). I don't know how long this has upset me. I figure a dark alley with a dingy couch is just as good a place to make out, but i suppose you feel much more awesome doing it when other people are around. Way to pay ten bucks to make others uncomfortable and not see a movie that your parents will quiz you about when they get home.

Anyways, country club theaters. That'd be the awesomeness.

I used to live in a city where they took an old 1800 seat theater and converted it to 1200. All seats reclined! Each row was raised 6 inches above the row in front. There was tons of room beside you and you could only touch the seat in front of you if you stretched out half out of your seat. The tickets were a buck more then anywhere else but totally worth it. All theaters should be built this way...

Put a bar in the theater. Let's face it, I have to be half crocked just to sit through most of the crap that comes out. As it is now, I bring a flask with me, so a bar would save me the trouble.

Many European theaters do have bars, plus reserved seating! I saw Seabiscuit in Bratislava, Slovakia, and Kill Bill Vol 1. in Budapest, Hungary. Both theaters were clean, modern, offered reserved seating, and a nice full bar in the lobby, right next to the concession stand.

We have a theater group (Rave Motion PIctures) where I live that IMHO does a great job. They offer true stadium seating, recliner chairs, and 48-inches of legroom between rows. It feels like flying first class. Some people are not going to become more courteous, but we can at least seat ourselves farther away from them.

Bigger screens. Fewer seats. No one under 18 admitted, period (yes, you are paying for the sins of your age cohort -- deal with it; it won't be the last time). A diligent staff which will nip disturbances in the bud.

I'd happily pay $12 or even $15 to see a movie if it's more like a Broadway experience.

As for smoking, there's no way it wouldn't disturb other people, whether by breathing the smoke or by obscuring the picture. Maybe there could be a smoking ROOM or something.

I actually remember when you could smoke at the Ziegfeld in NYC, no more.

The Ziegfeld is like going to a broadway show though.

For me, I've been to some high end European theaters and love it. I want reserved seating, in comfortable recliners or at least stadium seating. Food and drink a plus.

But here's this biggest part - no one under 25 is allowed in. No one. Unless she's really, really hot and the only words that come out of her mouth are, "yes, senator".

If people talk during the movie, the get escorted out (that includes all the audience reactions that others fine fun, I don't want to hear people clap and cheer, if you're still doing that at the movies by the time you're 26, grow the F up)

Anyone who talks to the actors on the screen during a movie is too stupid to live and should be taken out and beaten to death.

I'll pay up to $25 per ticket for this.

Matt

I had a great experience at The Moolah in St. Louis.

http://www.stlouiscinema.com/moolah/pressrelease.cfm

With ten rows of leather couches and chairs, a huge screen, a gorgeous dome ceiling, a full bar and Ted Drewes custard behind the counter, the Moolah is more like a mini-vacation than a grueling trip to the multiplex (and thanks for the "no children under five after 5" rule for PG-13 and R films).

400 seat deluxe MOVIE THEATRE & MUCH MORE
balcony seating
COUCH AND STADIUM SEATING
Full Bar!!
Live Music!!

The Alamo Draft House in Austin is one of the best movie going experiences you'll ever have (unless you also dated my college girlfriend - wink, wink, nudge, nudge). It's for people who LOVE movies. They have waiters inside the theater and you can order dinner from your seats. Everyone is there to enjoy the movie, so idiots know they are not welcome there. It's like a punk going to a James Taylor concert. This theater attracts a specific crowd and it's everything you ever wanted and more.

A bar in an American movie theater would push away half the customers
(kids) that would come to the movies. Whether you guys like it or not, they're a fairly large demographic, and it's just not conducive to business to have it that way. A 21+ movie theater would be cool (not for me, however), but it's almost certainly never going to happen in the states due to liquor liscene laws.

HOWEVER, should you put in a bar in AND serve dinner, then you'd be able to bring back that lost stock of children, and they'd be too busy stuffing their faces to make a peep. Then have some punchymen as previously mentioned to come in and knock the kids out if they start giving lip.

That was obviously a joke, but a dinner movie theater would probably be really neat.

I'd also say, in response to the no one under 18 permitted thing, that it would probably be cooler for under sixteen. It's not like there's much of a gap between 16 and 18; the only difference is the legality of smoking cigarettes, the legality of having sex, and the legality of becoming incarcerated. But most 16 year olds are mature enough to realize that they're going to piss of a lot of people should they act up. In said event, there's always the punchymen.

Or a bottle rocket.
