how to question for applying affect

imthinking

I saw this done before yet I can't remember how to do it:

I want to apply the exact filter to a number of edit points at the same time - what is the process for this?

Regards,
Brian

Here are three ways to handle the task:

1) If it's a simple dissolve or dip to color you can mark an in/out on the timeline to mark the area where you want the transitions. Then park the play head near one of the edit points and hit the quick transition key. Enter the duration of the transition and check the box that says, "apply to all transitions (in - out)". Hit add and you're good to go.

2) If the transition is an effect that you have already set up with keyframes/ and tweaked the parameters you can save the effect to a bin by dragging the little icon at the top of the effect editor into the bin. Then while still in effect mode shift-click on every cut point where you want your custom transition to occur, the cut points should now be highlighted. Go back to the bin and double click the effect, this will apply the effect to all the cut points.

3.) If you intend on using the effect frequently in the project you might want to add the effect to your quick transitions. Create a new bin and name it Quick Transitions, the name must be exact (case sensitive). Create your effect and save the effect to the Quick Transitions bin. Now when you use the quick transition method described above (#1) and click on the pull down menu at the top of the the transition editor you can select your custom effect.

drag your effect to a bin. Then lasso or shift select all clips you want it applied to and double clcik that effect.

Thanks to both of you - Grinner your way was the method i was taught before - its amazing how hard it is to remember the items in Avid if you a. your a newb and b. you don't edit daily in the thing!

I just spent some 40 hours in training and my mind tells me i know how to do something but for the life of me I can't remember how to do it - only time in the trenches will commit it to memory I suppose

Cheers,
Brian

another question :)
How do you set the length of time of an imported graphic in the timeline. Is there a way (rhetorical question) to tell the graphic I need you to be X long. I have looked everywhere for this and it seems to elude me. I know i can set my import features to bring it in as long as I want but wondered if after the fact can you change the length of the image clip?

Thank You,
Brian

You can set it in your import settings then you can set in and outs on your timeline and trim it as needed.
If animating it, you are best off using After Effects as Avid won't nativley import it bigger than your project settings and pan and scan is very limited compaired to AE. There are some plugins that will let ya too but again, it's quicker, easier and more powerful to do it in AE.

Yes that is what I do now - I set my import settings to make it 60 seconds and then set my points. However I just wondered for curiosity sakes if you could change the time in total length after you brought it in and it sounds like the answer is no!

Thanks - I'm sure i will return with more questions soon :)
