How to prevent clip numbers resetting for each card?

Just finished my first official shoot with the HMC150 and during the process of backing up the files, I noticed that for each card, the clip numbers are reset and start at 00000.MTS. Of course, this is very inconvenient and makes it easy to accidentally overwrite previously recorded data.

Is there any way to set the HMC150 to continue to increment the clip numbers? The closest thing I could find is the Meta Data > Clip Count Reset which is defaulted at NO anyways so that's probably not it. Based on the file name, it should be able to uniquely name 100,000 clips (00000 - 99999).

Yes.. simple fix here.... You can actually rename in FCP if you'd like... or an even easier way to do it... Copy all the files into one folder then the clips will continue in sequence. Quit handy if it's the same project... a bit more confusing if it's not.

Is there any way to do it in-camera or does the camera always reset the counting to 00000 when you put in a new card?

With my DSLR, it just keeps counting in order and doesn't reset to 0 unless you manually reset it or it overflows and starts counting again. I don't understand why the HMC150 wouldn't behave similarly.... If it isn't possible, this should be another fairly "simple" firmware upgrade (along with being able to turn off the EVF).

I'm not sure the naming options as I've never really needed that.. That was the one cool thing about the HVX.. each clip had a unique name. I'm sure others have solutions.

IF I were you I'd think about renaming in FCP or your NLE for starters and or putting the clips into one folder and having the NLE rename. Other than that, not sure what else is there....

Unfortunately, I don't think there is a way around this since AVCHD is based off of bluray format which always starts at 0 and counts up. Just be sure to keep your originals in separate folders and rename clips in your NLE if needed.

I came across with something like that with panasonic deck, and I don't remember how I did get it right.
it is in the options
I just can't remember but should be a way

Panasonic wrote back and confirmed that there is no way currently to keep the numbers from resetting. They said that they would forward the request to marketing and "maybe they will add these features in the next upgrade." :(

Reading Barry's guide it talks about setting up scene and take file names...

So you should be able to set something like 'date location' or 'scene 1 take' and it will auto count the clips by putting 001, 002... at the end of your custom name. So you could get something like '2009 10 03 Clip 001'

I am actually trying to prevent the HMC150 from resetting the count... makes media management much easier and less ambiguous.

Actualy, this process of inserting the metadata does not affect the clip name. It affect the internal clip name, if you set the TYPE2 and put the the record metadata to ON it will put a custom clip name that you set early on, but will not affect the clip name.

Hope to help

This is very frustrating for me too. If I have one shoot, one project, that spans 3 cards, then I have 3 different "Clip #1"'s in my bin. Yes, I know I can rename. But if you have 50 clips, that's very tedious and a pain. I've got better things to do with my time. I like the way P2 media works: every clip is a unique name. So what if it jiberish. At least it's unique.

Personally I use Vegas AVCHD Import... which puts a unique 8 character hex code at the end of all the clips.

Most just make a directory for each card download... making it easy to know the difference between clip 1's and 2's because they are in different directories.
